2/21 LJ

Fished from 10am-sunset with Landwhale, no fish but perfect conditions the whole day. This sea turtle was fearless and came right over to me bumping the kayak and just stayed there looking up at me. I tried to feed it a crushed up mackerel, but it did not seem interested. I have always seen turtles in LJ in the summer, usually they are munching on those big jellyfish and don't let you near them. I also had the misfortune of having one eat a flylined mackerel years back, they pull hard, I got the hook back from that one.

100+ LJ trips under my belt in two years and I have never once seen a turtle. I am truely jealous and envy you. The would wipe the frown off my face from 100 skunks if I got to see one. Stoked for ya!

Awesome sunset photo too. Maybe you'll have part in the Jackson cover photo two months in a row! Once in front of the camera, and once behind! :cheers1:

Awesome pictures. I especially love that sunset one. That should be a magazine cover. I have caught a Mako Shark and had a Gray Whale take my mackerel and give me a sleigh ride but I have yet to see a Turtle out at La Jolla. Maybe on one of my next trips. Thanks for sharing.

Andy, way to go!

That is one of the most vibrant photos I have seen in a looooooooong time!

Nice photos. Do you use a waterproof case with the Nikon or just stash it in a dry bag?

Just a dry bag, with a terry cloth inside. I usually only take it along on scenic trips, I was hoping to snag some cool whale shots today, saw a few but none close enough to bother for a photo.

Great shots Andy! Saw one of Steve's pics, seems the launch was pretty hairy.

WOW!!! Out of the beautiful things that I've seen in LJ I've never once have seen a turtle. That's awesome. Thanks for sharing.

That's really cool! You must be a lucky man.... Sea Turtles symbolize longevity and good luck.

Those were really killer pictures. I think it's time to get back in my kayak and enjoy La Jolla again. Thanks for the inspiration.

I've had 2 encounters with turtles. I saw one crossing the road the other day. He was going to the Shell station.

The other encounter was when I was kayaking and I saw one close up. That night I went to the movies and saw the same turtle there. I said, "Whoa, what are you doing here?" He said, "Well, I really liked the book."

:)

Great pics, Andy. That belongs on a cover somewhere. We always appreciate your posts and the help you give us rookies.

Great pictures Andy. very unusual to see a Turtle that amiable. There was a lot of them around Bahia Asuncion when I was down there in Jan. They might surface for a breath near you but as soon as they saw the yak they would split in a hurry. Impossible to get a picture of them. I actually snagged on by mistake in the front arm pit with a plastic and jig head. He was over 3ft across and there was no stopping him and thought I had hooked one of the big groupers until he came up for a breath. Finally was able to get within 10 feet of him and cut my line. That one will probably not get close to a kayak again.

Nice pics. Great colors on the sunset pic. Didn't know turtles are in the area.
You need one of these for the whale shots - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...mm_f_5_6e.html

I did see a green sea turtle last summer and was WTF?

Got home and googled it and found La Jolla is in the north end of their range.

Needless to say, the sighting made my day.

This one is better - you have the horizon closer to the bottom third of the frame and the kayaker at the right third of the frame. Rule of thirds makes photos a step above the rest.

ok - back to fishing...

Awesome pics and nice reptile sighting!

I've seen a few turtle in LJ, and there is one that supposedly lives in the Marine Room area!

Awesome! Both photos are great Andy, but to have that sea turtle come up to you like it did, is truly bitchen'. Lucky you on that. The few times we've seen sea turtles off of LJ, they skidaddle before we can get closer than 15 feet away, mostly just head views on them.
