Hawg Trough

Is anyone familiar with the CPR (catch, photo. and release) method using a Hawg Trough?
It's a method used in most of the Hobie World Tournaments and all over the Eastern and Southern USA ... It utilizes an app for your phone from iAngler.
You catch your fish, put it on the board and photograph it with a card or token that is given out the morning of the event and submit it to the app which goes to the Tournament director to tally the final lengths.
Hobie and the CCA are in support of this method as it's really the best for the fish's health on release.
Do you think that this system could work here in So.Cal for future tournaments?
I'll be attempting to put together a couple of CCA fundraiser kayak tournaments next year and I'd like to get some input on this tourney method which we are considering implementing.
Thanks...

Haven't used it with a token/ card but ncka uses the technique almost exclusively for their year long tournament foty

That is what they do at the Central Coast Slam Down tournament. You can also keep your fish if that is what you like to do. I don't see why it wouldn't work in So Cal.

If you're talking about a multi-day virtual tournament there would be alot of reasons to do this. For bass and rock fish species it would work. It would be hard to get a sizeable yellow, wsb, or halibut on a trough and completely in the picture. If I'm going to put a halibut out of the water, it will be dead or very close to dead.

I remember reading about some guy that got busted cheating with one in a tournament. He modified some troughs to make the fish appear larger. Better with a tape measure on top of the fish I think if you're worried about cheating.

Edit: Heres the article http://www.bassinyak.com/kayak-bass-...heater-caught/

Works well!

Yes, I would say we are several years behind on this.

Maybe the tournament can provide hawg troughs each uniquely marked with a number or sticker to prevent competitors having the chance to tamper.

Ultimately I think it's a good idea and welcome it.

Tokens or cards

..."Maybe the tournament can provide hawg troughs each uniquely marked with a number or sticker to prevent competitors having the chance to tamper."...
Tokens or cards are given out at registration and must be in the photo when taken.

:wsb:Yellows, Halibut and the like will always be a side-pot and separate weigh-in or measurement.

There will always be cheaters...and tape measures can easily be altered or painted too...this Hawg Trough method seems pretty good the more I research it and Hobie seems happy with the results of their World Tourneys.

Maybe Andy and OEX can start stocking the floating, pre-lined ones. I think they retail for about $20.
It looks like it might take a little practice to hold a fish down on the board and take the photo.

Inspect at checkin and affix sticker used only for that day

The token could be one of those inexpensive vinyl tape measures with the event stamped on it. Measure and token all in one shot.

Identifiable, and useful.

And you can see it in the lower right corner of the "trough shot"

Hawg Troughs

We use Hawg troughs for all of the KBF events. I can sit down with you and run through the entire CPR process, unique identifiers, etc...

CPR

Good Morning Richard...
Kevin and Morgan at Hobie have gone over the CPR tourney with me a couple of times but I can always use another outlook.
Please email me @ jim@sabaslayer.com and we'll connect.

Good News....

The CCA CAL State Board met last Wednesday at AFTCO and approved the budget to fund the “Battle of the Bays” CCA CAL Kayak Fishing Tournament. I’ve promised them it will be a “break even” or a $fund raising event and I hope to keep that promise to the board with the support of all involved.

The dates for the TWO tournaments are:
May 6th in Mission Bay & June 10th in Santa Monica Bay

This will be a Catch-Photo-Release Tournament with an additional Side-Pot for Biggest Fish and a Grand Prize for the combination of the two....all entrants must be a current member of CCA CAL.

The rules are modeled after some “Hobie World” qualifying tourneys that Keven and Morgan at Hobie have worked on.

I’m looking for volunteers to help with all the various jobs up to and including the Tournament days. Please feel free to off to help…LOL…!

Charles "Tatuna" will be working on the t-shirt design and Yani "Fisherman's Belly has offered to prep and cook the food and Hobie will be the title sponsor along with Cedros Kayak Fishing.

Sign-in and Weigh-in, Food and Prep, Ticket Sales, Set-up and all the volunteer help will be handled by the local SD and LA CCA Chapters.

LASTLY…Many of us in the planning would like this event to be as “all inclusive” as possible; both an event for hardcore tournament fishermen, but also something appealing to the first time tournament kayaker and kids or families.
Please offer any suggestions that you may have to enhance this event to be totally inclusive and fun!

As we get closer and things develop I'll share any info...

I look forward to making this a great event that will grow in the future.

Please contact me if you would like more info...jim@sabaslayer.com
