Zach Likes to Fish

My 6 year old son Zach got a fishing kayak from Santa this year. He has been out fishing 3 times so far, in winter.

This came home in his first grade homework packet the other day ... I guess he likes it ....

He is up to 6 fish and three species of fish. His nicest fish to date ...

He is super confident now ..

He even got to see something really really cool ..........

When we were out, a man kayaked over to us and asked if we could help his son who was float tubing land his fish that had been on for 20 minutes. I said, wow it must be a huge halibut. I took out my very large net and waited to see color. When I did, I put the huge net in the water under the fishes tail and said to the man, my net is waay too small and grabbed my gaff. I asked if they wanted to do it and they told me to go for it. I explained that there was a chance I could lose it in the gaff attempt, and they said go ahead.

Well I popped it, and got a game clip on it in one motion. I have heard stories about the explosive nature of these fish, so I put another game clip on it. Bought it shore and it measured out at 47 " 33 pounds. Caught on 12 pound test! Very nice Trophy Fish. I know it is bad form to post another persons, fish, but all of this happened right in front of my six year old. This was the largest fish I have ever seen caught in front of me and my son saw it all. Now all he can talk about is going out to catch his own 47 " Halibut .......

My 3 1/2 year old is very tall for her age and I've been contemplating getting her her own mini X as well. Great job introducing your son to what will be a lifetime of awesome memories.

Question, where did you put the gaff shot? Don't see any holes:you_rock:

The Mini X is awesome and super stable. The price was a steal at OEX's blem sale, thanks again OEX!!!!!!!!

Well the gaff shot lol, you can see it on the other side in the head. My friend told me after the fact that I should NOT have gaffed it in the head because of the large bones there. When I gaffed it, it was one motion and brought it up enough to slap the first game clip on it. I have always heard that this size can freak out, thus the second game clip. You know what, my bad gaff must have killed it with a brain shot as it never moved after the gaff, lol.....

No, it's too far north. Plus we prefer saltwater fishing for many reasons.

Thank you for the invite. It's all good.

Sorry to burst your bubble dad, but that's not a kayak - it's a SUP he drew.

Haha...

I know what his next picture will be...Zach will be holding a picture of a yellowtail on La Jolla Shores.

Nice work...

That's awesome, stud size flattie too. Question, how old is your boy? And how long can he stay out on the water before he's tired of it? I can't wait for my son to be old enough to come out with me.

Zach is 6 almost 7 and I want to make it fun and not a chore. After ever fishing trip he get his favorite food, pizza, so he has that to look forward to when he is starting to get board.

I usually stay on the water only 2 to 4 hours depending on action and my sons attitude. I always make sure he is warm and dry. On really cold days we bring a thermos of Hot Chocolate and cookies.

It has to be fun or there is no point in doing it.

Enjoy it!

Well off for another fishing adventure, hope we find the right kind .....
