Diver in Mission Bay (Safety, Lobster)

http://www.cbs8.com/story/19683322/diver-rescued-in-mission-bay

I was hooping in Mission Bay last night and heard someone yelling from up under the Ventura Bridge. Two guys freediving around the bridge and rocks. One got stuck underwater... I helped him pull his buddy onto the rocks so he could do CPR.

Lifeguards and paramedics were there pretty quick, the dive buddy was a firefighter and started CPR right away, but he was under for 10 minutes. It did not look good and he was still unresponsive when I left. (25 y/o)

Lots of accidents last couple of days. Be prepared, stay safe, keep your buddies close, and pay attention out there....

Bummer. Hope everything turned out OK.

Damn, grim reminder. For what it's worth to anyone else, brain tissue death begins to occur at 4 minutes without oxygen. 10 minutes and you are more than likely to be in the Terri Schiavo category (if revived).

Glad you were there to help! Hopefully he survived.

Hope he's OK.

I was in Mission Bay on Saturday, and the currents were pretty crazy.

I would swear there were rip currents if there were such things inside the bay.

There were currents near the bottom that would take a 3 Oz weight and take it 100 yards in about a minute.

Unfortunately he didn't make it. :(

SAN DIEGO — A man diving for lobsters in Mission Bay died Sunday night after being pulled from the water.
The man had been free diving near the Ventura Street Bridge on West Mission Bay Drive about 8:30 p.m., San Diego lifeguard Lt. Greg Buchanan said.
After someone called 911, lifeguards arrived and found the man on some rocks where someone was giving him CPR, Buchanan said. They moved the victim to flat ground and continued lifesaving measures to no avail.
It’s unclear what caused the man’s death. It’s believed he was in his 20s. His name has not been released.

A guy died in the same spot last year on opening weekend. Definitely have to be careful out there!
