Orca's got lady luck on his side. We landed this thing with no gaff or net. I came in with the assist and sunk the fish grip in its mouth. Once I got it I dragged it in and went primal on it giving it some good brain trauma. Sucker taped out at 40" with a 29" girth. We're est. near 30lbs. Should've brought a scale.

I caught one that size last year. The steaks on that fish are amazing. Good job and congrats on the prize.

Nice fish and without a gaff? Impressive way to bring in the new year.

Good work!

Thanks! It was a team effort. I think I had more fun than Orca. Yeah no gaff. I've fished these grounds for over a year now and this is only the second halibut I've come across. After today I'll be bringing a gaff with me.

steveooo 01-07-2018 08:20 PM

Heck yeah! That’s a nice one!

Good work!

I wouldn’t have landed it without Saba’s Help. The dude is a fishacidal maniac.
I was kind of wanting to see if Saba would have lipped it. I’ll bet he would have tried rather than let it escape.

Orca Winfrey 01-07-2018 08:57 PM

Thanks all. Saba knows how to handle fish! That thing had a set of choppers it wanted to use on him. If he wasn’t there, I would have chickened out and released it. After this, I know that the FG knot is very reliable.

Yes. It was an amazing and fun fight. Multiple runs where it went from surface to the bottom effortlessly.

They are astoundingly strong fish. I had one like that (smaller, obvi) in MDR it fought like a fish twice its size. It got me hooked on fishing Halibut for sure.

Great catch!!!

ratdog 01-08-2018 08:05 AM

Very impressive, Congrats and thanks for sharing.

Flounder 01-08-2018 08:23 AM

Credit to Saba. Only Saba is crazy enough to do something like that. The guy is an animal.

Lol! Those are only for people who expect to catch big fish. Besides, I’ve got King Saba - the crazy fish killer.

Baja Marty 01-08-2018 02:49 PM

Beautiful halibut! Looks bigger than 30# to me. Congrats!

ful-rac 01-08-2018 05:04 PM

Nice fish! :luxhello:

Glad to see guys get excited about catching a nice halibut like that. Everybody should get excited about catching a fish like that! It's a fish of a lifetime to most people. These days watching Greg catch one...you'd think his dog died...

LEEZO 01-08-2018 05:34 PM

congratulations! prize winner there, that one will keep you searching for years to come.

jbl_91762 01-08-2018 07:37 PM

Wow nice catch! I was told there are big butt along the beach but me personally I don't feel comfy eating fish caught in LBC. I caught legal bass all day long a few weeks ago and let them all go. But if you both were cool with it, I'd love to learn from you 2, hell I'll treat to bfast or lunch to show my appreciation!

Thanks. Seriously, I was just very lucky. I actually don’t get to get on the water enough to be much of a mentor. There are however, lots of people on this site with way more expertise than me. I am always up for meeting new people though.

I also thought about the toxin levels in our local fish; especially the older ones like this butt. I figure that it will probably be ok if we don’t eat it more than a couple times a month. I have to recheck the recommendations as to what’s safe. I’m more concerned about how much my kid eats. Thanks for the reminder.

Same for me in MDR. That's why everything I catch (that will survive) goes back into the drink...

Probably the best idea. I most likely going to CR from now on; unless like you said it’s going to die.

GregAndrew 01-09-2018 12:36 PM

Congrats, very nice fish! Especially without a gaff.

Annually, there is a water/fish quality piece put out (can't remember who, but might even be the DFW?) that rates the water at most beaches and harbor areas. They also give recommendations on how frequently you should be able to eat different types of fish based on your age and other factors. Some fish, like Croakers, you should pretty much never eat from harbors. Others, like Halibut, are rarely rated at less than twice a week (even for children, and caught in harbors). The tendency of the fish and its food supply to wander in and out of the harbors will contribute to the variations. Maybe somebody can post up the most current ratings?

Awesome fish!

Yup so offended by an internet stranger.

Just saying cause the way I read your sentence that I quoted made it seemed like you need to let everyone know that fish is the norm for you.

Here is another of your comments on someone else's report a few weeks back. It's cute how us lowly noobs spend time on the water but all you do is catch fish. :notworthy:

jorluivil 01-10-2018 09:16 AM

That's a nice one.

It's hard to estimate the weight of the fish without a scale, I've seen 40" halibut that were 20lbs and some that were almost 40lbs. Regardless, that's a nice fish for that area, congrats!!!

Iceman 01-10-2018 09:28 AM

Knowing Tony, I read both of the comments listed as he enviously wishes he could capture that enthusiasm and excitement of the days of old.
