San O Yeah!

Graduated from kayak surfing class 101 yesterday. Learned a little bit more about a lot of stuff in 2 hours of mostly sitting around. Can't wait to see what the next 3 years brings. BTW, I only earned a B, you will see why.

kool vid. saw that wipe out but didn't see any halis....:p
so seriously this was a actual class? or were you just out there practicing? i wonder how or what the difference would be for the hobie drivers out there. it looks like that your wilderness was being pushed around real good. the hobies seems like it would be less maneuverable and would have more wipe outs.

Yakin 04-09-2012 10:50 AM

looked liek a blast were you on your own yak?

GregAndrew 04-09-2012 11:49 AM

No Tim, only the school of hard knocks. Although you could probably learn much faster from Jim Sammons classes. No idea about the Hobies, but My O K Trident 15 does not turn on a dime either. Tony was on his Malibu kayak that is even bulkier than mine.

Of course that is my yak, a surfing yak would be cheating. I came in from fishing and unloaded all my gear before going surfing though.

Actually Greg that looked like you had a great time, I have been threatening to do that, now I think I may since I haven't been doing so hot with the fish, I saw the halibut...that's the kind I have been catching lately...lol

I learned alot from the video Greg....next time I see you in the surf zone I'll tie my kayak to yours for a smooth ride in....

Wow! Nice control & balance. Great demonstration and a valuable experience to watch. Thanks.
PS: Looked more like a TURTLE than a hali?

So where does one launch from at San O?

GregAndrew 04-11-2012 02:11 PM

I launch at the South end of the surf beach parking. There is some regulation about staying south of the "OK" sign for paddle powered devices. I am not sure where that sign is though. Costs $15 to park on the dirt road/lot. There is a small channel south of the lot and north of the Domes that is easier to negotiate the surf in (except in very high surf). So I usually 45 my way in and out, outside the shore break, when loaded for bear. Take frozen/plastics cause the bait situation can be tough.

Kahouna 04-11-2012 04:43 PM

Man, watching all those videos has me wanting to drive on up there and give it a go. I can crash with the best of 'em. Maybe after the water warms up a bit. Maybe those of us with access to Pendleton should all meet and head out from there?
