Surf Launching and Landing a Hobie

Ive seen a few posts recently from people that are hesitant to try La Jolla, because they are unsure about their first surf launch. I also see alot of posts from people inquiring of how to surf launch and land a Hobie.

Since a surf landing is usually more difficult than a surf launch, I went to La Jolla today and made a little tutorial of how I do it it my Hobie.

Hopefully it will help someone out, and give them the courage to try the Big Water and chase after some bigger fish :yt::wsb:

Conditions were simply awesome today.... Fishing was only good for a couple of Boccacio which will live to be caught another day, but the whales, dolphin and crystal clear water made for a great day to be out on the PA.

Sorry, forgot the report part of the report. Fishing was slow. I was on the water from 6 til 9. During that time I managed 2 squid, which was more than most people were able to snag. Air was hot, water was cold, swell was flat, wind was calm, whales were active. Fun day :luxhello:

Here are a few more random pics from the day. Fishing is overrated, I'm going to start just taking nature pics or something

There was a whale that kept coming up about 50 yds behind, but I was to slow.

For a second there, I thought the seagul was going to get munched by a rogue set. Thanks for the informative how to on surf landing.

Is it always like that or was it just a fluke? looks like a great place to launch
especially since I'm somewhat gimpish from a total knee replacement and the other one is going to get done real soon.....H:cool:

This just confirms that with a lot of time on the water snd much practice regular people can survive the punishing ocean.

Glad you had everything strapped down.:D

That is called MAD skills...

He is an expert on dealing with the various conditions Lake LJ has to offer...

Did you notice how he didn't even bother to go for his paddle?

That, my friend, is confidence...I too have been out at Lake LJ, and if it wasn't for the waves, I would've had to paddle in...timing is everything...

He is an expert...:notworthy:

I'm one of the "apprehensive ones" about "my first surf launch/landing". I had plans to go with my buddy Ken to LJ today. I made the mistake of looking at the surf forcast which said, 2-4' with an occasional 6-7'. So instead, I went to SD bay for halibut. Caught one about 19", and one sand bass.

I had bigger wakes I had to jump today in the bay than what was in LJ today. I guess the bottom line of the story is, I need to just go to LJ and DO IT! Thanks for the tutorial. I WILL make good by my New Years resolution to catch a YT and or WSB on my kayak this year. See you soon at LJ, come hell or high water!

Go for it. Next weekend should be light surf. It is time to practice if you want to be ready for WSB season.
