Christmas Vermi----n

Didn't want to let out the word on these during THE BITE. :)

These were caught Christmas Eve, on plastics around 160', the
biggest one of the morning went ballistic, spiked me and got free.

Reminder that the season is over now until April 1st...

(In the next couple of months I will target halibut and sculpin.)

Broil with Cajun seasoning.

Tacos: cajun broiled red rockfish, organic Broccoli Slaw, Ranch, grated cheese, and salsa - with $3 wine. Nice.

We must have passed over the same little group, same depth around the same day. I probably saw you. I threw mine back, I thought there was something wrong with it....it was all red with big eyes and it made popping, hissing sounds, simply terrible. When it popped to the surface the world as I knew it shattered. It had never occurred to me that there were actually things below me in that inky blackness that were not not normal.....no, not normal at all. Kidding, nice fishees, beautiful food shots..:luxhello:

Damn that looks super tasty Larry! :luxhello:Too bad I didn't get a chance to tag along with you this season. I got pretty fed up with fishing for a couple of months. haha:o

Nice Tacos

But how could you do that to that nice meal... 2 Buck Chuck? Come on now - you could've at least splurged for a bottle of Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill :biggrinjester:.

Hey Larry, exactly how to you target sculpin without catching a bunch of rockfish?

Blackcloud,

Do you use broccoli stalks for your slaw, and do you skin them first? I live raw stalks.

I'm not picky. If its easy to make, I'll eat it. My food photos were sort of tongue-in-cheek.

Pre-shredded organic Broccoli Slaw = Trader Joe's.
Pre-shredded mexican Cheese = Trader Joe's.
Salsa = Trader Joe's.
Tortillas = Trader Joe's.
White Wine = Trader Joe's.
Rockfish = off Bird Rock.
Fish dinner $5.

As for targeting sculpin vs rockfish, I'm working on some ideas.

Basically though I would be fishing much shallower, at 100' or less, where
any by-catch could be released. I use a very targeted approach, not just
drifting indiscriminately .... I've found spots that seem to be 100% sculpin.

Several years ago I had a small boat and we used to catch tons of Sculpin out by the oil rigs in Huntington Beach. This was pre 9-11 and you could get right up next to the rigs. The depth was about 80 feet and we mostly used dead anchovies for bait. Never caught a rock fish at that location.

MVC, I've seen that too. There are spots in the Santa Monica Bay off
MDR where the 1/2 day boat would anchor and sack up a couple hundred
sculpin -- one, two and even three at a time. So they are 'targetable'.
