Anyone for La Jolla Friday 8/8

This would be my third time out in the ocean kayaking but my first time going for tuna. I would love if someone(s) to go fishing with. I'm not fimilar with the LJ area (where to fish, where to launch from, etc. I kinda suck at the whole surf launch thing...WOW I'm making this sound awesome. Anyways, I love to fish and down for paddling the distance. I normally pick up and bring live bait so no messing around with all that. You may tell me that buying live bait is lame bc there maybe tons of bait out there that's easy to get. I'm not looking for a babysitter but someone to tag along with to show me the ropes. I'm not annoying to be around so you won't want to drown me by the end of the day.

Hope my posting isn't a huge buzz kill but I thought I'd give it a shot. :reel:

Do you mean Yellowtail instead of Tuna?
Surf launch is easy.
I might fish tomorrow. If I do, you're more than welcome to tag along.
Mike

Cadillyak 08-07-2014 01:57 PM

I'll be out there.

Chris, If the crowd is smart they're gonna be following you around.

Silbaugh4liberty 08-07-2014 04:16 PM

Sounds good, i have a 90 minute drive from Brea (north oc), so I'll shoot for leaving at 0430, which should get me there around 0600

Mike, LOL, I don't think so, you would actually be a much better choice.

I am actually (free) guiding a longtime friend and his buddy on their first La Jolla trip.

I have only guided (free) one other time last summer, and he ended up with double YT's.

Actually I have been getting skunked lately and hope to break the spell tomorrow.

See you out there as I know you love it ......

Thanks for all the info and responses. I'm looking forward to going out tomorrow. I'm hoping to pick up some bait before heading out there and the bait dock doesn't open until 6 but sometimes they're there as early as 4 depending on the charter schedules. Heading over to pick up bait at Oceanside at 5 and hoping it's one of the guys I know and then heading to LJ. I'll be at LJ either way by 6 at the latest.

I don't have a gaft but I have a net - would having a net out there be rediculous?

Cbad Mike 08-07-2014 09:35 PM

I believe by law you should always have a net. I keep mine in the front hatch and never use it.
Your wasting your time and money bringing live bait to Lj. It's like bringing sand to the beach.
I'm gonna go out on a limb here since you said you didn't have a gaff that you probably don't have a game clip either.
Save your bait money and buy one of each when you get time.

With that said..... What color kayak will you be on? I have a green Malibu Stealth. If you see me don't be shy and say hello.

I'm in a yellow strike. I'm guessing that you use strips of squid to snag bait? I've snagged bait on shore and guessing it's all the same set up using truble hooks?

Thanks for taking the time giving me all this info. It's much appreciated.

FlyFishinYakr 08-08-2014 12:26 AM

Good luck to all involved! :reeling:
Tight lines and short sleigh rides (or long, if you're so inclined!) :D
I plan on heading to Bako to visit a friend and my "Godson" home visiting from Northwestern U.
I'm looking forward to reading many successful posts upon my return!

No. Whole different ballgame. The easiest and most productive method is using a sabiki rig.
All the info that you could ever ask for is in these pages of the forum.
I'll keep my eye out for you and try to answer your questions.
If you end up launching by yourself just paddle straight out for about 3/4 of a mile and don't start fishing until your near someone else fishing and ask if your past the zone. Follow the kayakers with fishing rods not the ones with helmets.

momo fish 08-08-2014 06:11 AM

And DO NOT following the kayakers with helmets and fishing rods!

Good luck out there and hope to here a good report back

Well, I didn't catch anything today but hey...you can't catch every time. I'll be back out there again once I'm weeee bit more prepared. Of course Mike hooked up on a yellowtail (which he thought was small but bigger than ANY fish I've even thought of catching).

You guys rock with all your tips and showing me around. Ummmm seriously so much knowledge! I really appreciate it and even though I didn't catch, I still had a great time. Next time I'll catch a big mama.

It was great meeting the guys that were out there today. Absolutely love all the positive mojo and can't wait to get back out there (perhaps on a bigger kayak).

It was good meeting you.
If you read all you can here on BWE and spend time on the water you'll be hooking them in no time! :)

Welcome to the forum and welcome to the addiction! Like all addictions you have good days and bad days. Seems like in the 2.5 years I've had my yak, its been a series of ups and downs getting it rigged correctly. All I can say, is do it right the first time. I have tried to take the cheap route and it has always back fired. I think I have it now thanks to the guys at Fastlane! See you out there. Send me a PM and lets fish sometime!

fellow lady angler,

Thanks for the advice! I'm really stoked to see another gal that likes to fish. All my girlfriends won't go fishing with me and the ones that do - don't really "want" to fish. I'll definitely take you up on that offer to go out there. Mike gave me some advice on things that I need to get so I'm going to get those things done before going back out there. I have my kayak which is totally not for fishing but has done me well in the harbor and the lagoons. Fishing a couple miles out is a totally different beast. I'm stoked for my new addiction.

Cheers!
Kate

Good luck out there and welcome. Looks like you just increased the amount of lady kayak anglers out there by a 3rd :)
