strip paint off a kayak
 

I got my kayak used and the guy that had it before me painted it a dark green. Well the color matches the ocean pretty well and just thinking its not very safe and the paint has been worn off and scraped off from use 8n lots of places. I want to remove the green and painting over it seems like it would just make it look worse any suggestions?

You might give a water based paint stripper in a small test spot.
It might be safer to scuff the entire Kayak and paint over the green with the color you want. Several companies make paint especially designed for "plastic"
based products. Most new automotive paints are water based as well.
The paint for rubber bumpers take a lot of abuse. the newer vette's are no longer fiberglass but an ABS composite, flexible and extremely durable.

Might be a left field idea but how about having it sandblasted with a less agressive media like walnut shell, corn cob, plastic grit or even baking soda. The type of paint used would determine the proper media. These media's wouldn't pit, warp or harm the plastic but may leave a dull, yet consistent finish. Just a thought.

camo paint on top of that, you could get really creative with the patterns.... just a thought...

Just keep coating it in different color paints whenever you feel like changing the color and let the next owner worry about it. :D

I dont think you want to use any paint strippers on it, may harm the plastic??

try to use some fine steel wool.

use the worn our paint as motivation to upgrade :D

Or you can just take it for a little voyage in team sewer territory, a few minutes in those waters and it'll look like new.

Thanis for the advice I was thinking a bad ass camo theme I have lots of experience painting stuff camo seeing as I am a Marine was just worried about being visible on the water but a camo paint job could be in its future.
