More Rod Questions - Live Bait Set Ups
 

Admittedly I like to shop for gear and talk gear more than I actually like to have it once I get it so im always buying and selling and looking for the next thing. This time I am looking for an upgrade for my live bait set up.

I was using a Daiwa 50H on an old glass 15-40 7' rod for this, but recently got Penn 25N that I will be paring with a new rod.

I'm looking for something 7-7'6" in the 15-30 to 20-50, range. I will fish 65# braid w/ 30# top shot.

Maybe around 200 bucks. Preferably neutral in color (black, dark grey, CF, etc.) some accents would be fine as long as they aren't a contrasting color.

Any recommendations within that budget?

If you don’t mind little fast action I’d recommend Daiwa proteus boat rod line for your budget. Comes with lifetime warranty and really good rod for the money

If you want the advice of a tackle nerd who doesn't make time to fish, here's my $0.02.

Fishing braid and live bait? I'd fish a glass rod.

A Daiwa VIP 870 would make a great 25-30# kayak rod; and it would save you $80.

If you're going to fish 25-30, you might spool that reel with 50# braid, just a thought.

A Calstar WC 670 is basically god's gift to 40# rigs if you want to go up a line class and spend some loot, lol. Go pull on one some time and be amazed at the backbone. You could lift up the bottom of the ocean with that rod. Really any 670, even older glass models from Fenwick, is one heck of a 40# stick.

Noted. I will keep an eye out for either. I have a gift card to bass pro and unfortunately they don't sell daiwa rods (I know wierd), but I will look around and if I gotta pay out of pocket it is what it is. On second thought I had a 670, it a was a good halibut rod. I got it from Mike here on the forum but it was cut down to 7' and it was a jig stick. Not sure where the length was taken from but I felt like it needed to be wrapped higher up. Maybe that's why I didn't like it.

Also, @full flavor pike I plan to fish 65 on this set up because it's going to be an everything kind of rig. I will also fish it on boats, not just my kayak, so I think a 15-40, 20-40, 20-50 would be great. Maybe even favoring the heavier side for the yoyo.

I looked pretty hard at the Mojo Salt Conventional Rod, but ultimately decided to go with an Okuma PCH Custom 7' 30-60 because it was more available and has a lifetime warranty, ALPS seat and guides. They were on sale for 150 bucks at Peformance Tackle, so a buddy of mine snagged me one while he was there. By all accounts they are a good rod in the price range I was looking for. Might be a little stiff for live bait but I have some other rods that will fit into that role for now.

So now I guess I am looking to upgrade my live bait slow trolling rod. Thinking something in the 12-25, 15-30 range. I have a Seigler SGN that needs a rod, that might be a candidate for live bait fishing

Another plug for the Daiwa VIP. I use a 270 to fish 20# with an Okuma Metaloid 5N; and it's one hell of a rod at the price point.

X2 for Calstar 670 WC which comes in black. This is a 7' rod rated 20-50.

In general the Old Sabre number scheme has been adopted by many makers for glass rods (I think they were the first ones with the scheme). The general scheme is the last two digits indicate the length. 270, 670, 870 are all 7 foot. 865 and 665 are 6.5 feet. Then the base rods were available in alternate weights, L,H,XH,XXH,XXXH and so on. Finally, a few rods were also available in alternate lengths, like you could get a 270H8(my favorite 20 to 25lb rod, a Heavy 270 8 foot long). The 670 was also available in a 8 foot version (670-8). I am reasonably sure the longer versions just had an extra foot on butt section. I also love the 196-8 for a 15lb live bait rod. In general, I think of the rods like this 196(15lb), 270(20), 870(25), 670(30). The L takes off about 5 LB and the H adds about 5 or 10. I am old and my back hurts, so if I need to fish 40 I use a 665H for bait. For tossing jigs, I'd probably go to one of the 9 foot rods (the number is escaping me, 690 maybe). I never really had a jig rod beyond my 270H8 and 670.

I never understood the nomenclature used. This helps alot. I recently got rid of a Seeker 270H-8 that probaby would have been perfect for this application but at the time I didn't use it much. :facepalm: Additionally I had an old Fenwick 270C that I sold a few months back, again probably would have been perfect other than the foam grips were old and wearing.

aw gotcha. Looks like most online sellers are OOS right now, but next time I go down to SD i will have to stop by squidco.
