Garmin sonar colors

Does anyone know how or know of how to find out how dense the different colors are on a fishfinder?

The waves make it difficult for me to get a clear picture of the bottom so I'm hoping to use the colors to better identify the bottom.

I understand that a very dark skinny line mean's rock bottom but I hope to get a little better understanding how the fish finder works.

Correct. It's a density thing, not a color thing (colors are adjustable and vary from unit to unit.)

Gradual change from color to color typically means less-dense bottom. Think sand, grass/vegetation. Quick changes in color (like you describe as skinny lines) typically mean dense bottom. Hard pack, rock, or concrete/asphalt (seen mostly in freshwater, obviously.)

The best way to learn your unit is to use your unit. The best education is time on the water......
