LJ Water Temps

Pretty Interesting read.. Several stories out there about Scripps Pier recording some above average record water temps

"Therefore, a new spike is occurring and pushing the limits," he said. "There are sensors and buoys (at La Jolla Scripps Pier) reporting up to 77 to 80 degrees. We are working to confirm with Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego if this is an all-time (record), but it sounds like it may be."

Dana headland & the San Mateo Kelp have been pretty much a few stems for awhile now. The Barn Kelp is gone. There is a little kelp left at San Onofre, but judging by its rate of decline I wouldn't give it two more weeks.

On a positive note

The kelp dying off will break away and make kelp paddies to attract yellows and
mahi. Maybe it is time to "use a lifeline" and "ask a friend" (one that has a boat).

I'm guessing the hammerheads are coming up to Malibu again this year. Probably already down in SD

Water temp

The water temps have been high and hard to believe. Each of the 4 times I have been out to LJ in the last two weeks the temp is higher then the time before. The bad side of that, is also the bait keeps getting harder to find and there appears to be less trophy fish to be found within 3 miles of shore. Yesterday, I managed to get a ton of bait and huge greenbacks at that, by going north to were I could see before light that the bait boat were working. I found them just north/west of the blacks beach canyon. Then I fished Torrey Pines and back south to the kelp by the Cove. Going over part of the Scripps Canyon my meter stopped showing the bottom at 996 feet but the water temp was 80.1 at the surface. No Yellows found, but at least there was lots of bird and Porpoise action. No Hammer Heads seen.
