Halibut are sooooo last year:cool: |
This is a good video to get you started.
http://youtu.be/SpFB_6anwKU I'm sure if you have any more question you can ask him. Lol |
Use a trap hook with live bait.

So you wanna catch halibut huh?
Thing about halibut fishing is that it's very boring but rewarding....I suggest you fish the harbors and bay's at first. Try to refine your rigs and techniques, really pay attention to details, where when what time, structure etc...use live bait, buy or make your own, I suggest you make your own. If you can be proficient at making your own bait regularly...it will definitely make you a better fisherman overall. |
Buy a PA14
Regardless of what ANYONE says use traps rigs Make you own bait Drop bait in water Lean the backrest on the vantage seat to a comfy position Sleep and wait for the halibut to bite <a href="<iframe width=" 640"="" height="480" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/-eX8QtSxCLU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="">"><a href="<iframe width=" 640"="" height="480" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/-eX8QtSxCLU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/-eX8QtSxCLU?vq=highres" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="480" width="640"></iframe> |

A sure way to learn how to halibut fish.
1. PM Tony, George, or Greg. (Not Jim) 2. Introduce yourself. 3. Ask if you can join them on the next fishing trip. (Offer to buy lunch) 4. Ask a million questions, listen and copy their rigs. 5. Fish very close to Greg, if you can tangle his line once or twice you are close enough. He does not mind, he is nice. 6. Do not fish too close to Tony, he will try to touch you. (felony type of touching) Ask them about BusyBee. |

I'm still working on fat butts.... One tip I can give... It sucks losing $4 cannonballs on snags... I tried using 40lb main line to 3way swicel to 40lb sinker to 30lb flouro on the trap rig....hopijg if I snagged I'd lose the rig not the sinker.... For some reason I'd still lose the sinker lol... I tried a different approach this time. Spectra to cannonball to swivel to 30lb flouro and trap rig.... Worked good... Still got bites and didn't lose any balls.... Only bad part is when bait wraps around that spectra its a bitch to undo the mess... Either way I saved money and caught fish 😀
It helps too minimize knots to maximize your chances of taking that sweet butt home |

Here'swhat I do when I get snagged Put your reel in free spool and paddle in for about 50' or untIL the line is scoped back. Tighten you drag to the max and paddle in a large circle while keeping maximum pressure on the snag. If that doesn't work turn around and paddle in the the opposite direction. 9 out of 10 times you'll get your entire rig back |
Thanks Jorge I'll try that next time .... I always just get right above the snag... Put prseeure on it then let it freespool.,.. Put it back in gear after slack has been given ... Then start jerking it like it hasnt been jerked in weeks...hoping it will bounce off... Worked a few times... I'll try your method

Awesome advice guys! Thankfully I have a PA14 for those naps. Hopefully this weekend I can put your advice to use.

If you are specifically targeting them use live bait. Either buy sardines if available or make your own bait. In the bays the best spots are next to docks and pilings. You will see smelt feeding on the growth. Jig a sabiki in those spots and you should get some attention. If that fails, troll freshwater bass type jerkbaits in deeper sections of the bay and you should pick up a few Macks. I don't use a trap hook but they are useful for smaller fish. Simply get your bait to the bottom and go with the flow until the bait cklicker goes off. And have your club ready if its big.
