Too windy this weekend?

Anyone go out today? I'm thinking of going out of DP tomorrow but not sure if I'll just spend the day fighting a losing battle with the wind.

Super Windy!!!!

yeah, no fun! like 3 foot rollers in 150ft....bad wind swell :( Day At The Docks tomorrow anyway...free tacos :)

Squid Vicious 04-12-2014 09:19 PM

...I'm going to show up Alan...hopefully the wind ceases :reel:

Not sure what weather report you're looking at. I've checked about 3 and it says wind will pick up to a max of 10mph (which I personally don't think is too bad) not only that but it won't pick up to even 10mph until 1-2pm
Mikescales and I will be at Dana point boat ramp at 6 am and getting a nice scoop of dines :)

Showing 7-8kts winds forecast for tomorrow, I guess I'll see what it's like in the morning. Sounds like it'll be no fun.

Maybe it's the optimistic side of me but it says 9 mph light chop for the forecast. And 4 ft on the swells I think could still be manageable?

Looks like it might pick up by 11 from that forecast. I'm not an early riser so 6am is definitely out for me. I'm lucky to be otw by 9 usually and like to fish till sunset!

YakDout 04-12-2014 10:12 PM

If you do end up coming around 9 or so, mike and I will be on ch71 and probably fishing near headlands kelp

alanw 04-12-2014 10:17 PM

Ok cool, what time will you be out till? Last time I went up to the headlands when it was windy it was a 45 minute paddle into the wind. Coming back sure was nice though, only 15 mins :p

YakDout 04-12-2014 10:24 PM

Well weather permitting, and I'm an optimist, we should be fishing into the afternoon at minimum, 3-5pm

Alright cool, I'll look for you and Manny if I decide to go. I'll be on a green Stealth 12. Good luck in the AM

Wind may be an issue out at the pipe beyond the long break wall.

Usually wind is not an issue til about 11 am. If you go north, the wind will be at your back coming back in (and not an issue on your way out if you leave early).

If you go south and stay inside the shallows, you will be fine too. usually that wind is blocked and not a big issue.

Have fun post up a good report.

Spring time almost a guarantee to be windy in the pm, yesterday morning had several glassy hours after sunrise, choppy at 11 on the way in........slow fishing for me.

Fished headlands yesterday (sat) afternoon with MrM. Clean and clear. Thru hull temp was in the low mid 60's. 2-3' swells. Winds, not bad if you're pedaling. Plenty of the right size greenbacks between the alleys. MrM took home some nice sandys and sculpin. They liked his squid, not mine  I beat the skunk tho

We fished the sewer yesterday. The start of the day had some light winds blowing and by early afternoon it we had the usual Cabrillo winds............as usual we were talking about lunch by 9am.

6 yakkers, live healthy bait, not one raked bait.

tailgating it at Busy Bee by 1pm

YakDout 04-13-2014 03:38 PM

Very slow out there for us as well,
Loaded up the bait tank with 6-10" greenbacks. They don't have sardines even though the report clearly states they do. Saw two big whales as soon as we exited the channel and headed north to headlands. Saw working birds a bunch of different times, would peddle over and the mackerel were thick. Really thick. Seems like something was pushing these baits up, but nada. I got a couple macs on the surface iron, and flylined right through the turmoil. Nothing of the right kind mixed in. The weather was awesome today until about 1pm it started to chop up a little. We headed over the check out the pipe and flats. Both of our baits greenbacks got smashed down one of the kelp stringers, nothing to show for it. Slow day, but hey, I got time on the water.

Yep slowish day for me as well, but happy the wind wasn't as bad as the forecast said it would be and glad I went out. I got a real late start, otw around noon. I expected sardines too but all they had was anchovies so I loaded up. I fished a little around the harbor entrance while deciding whether to paddle upwind to the headlands. Was a bit choppy but I went for it anyway, getting there around 2:00. I looked for other yakkers but only saw one there and as I started paddling over to say hi he started paddling away just giving a wave. Might have been Manny?

I hit the kelp area and around the red buoy for about an hour only to get a big 16" mac that I kept for cut bait for next trip. Trolled a lucky craft all the way back for nothing. Hit Doheny for some raked baits. Out to the buoys for my first ever lingcod! He was short at 16" but still the first one I've caught. The lucky craft picked up a Calico on the troll back to the harbor at around 6:30. And a few more good hits by the boat docks but must have been too small for my 4/0 hook so I just pulled up the remaining anchovie heads.

All in all it was slow but still a pretty nice day on the water.

The day was nice indeed!
Glad you made it out, too bad we couldn't connect out there. Next time.
