Storing Large Catch?

Hello everyone.
I was curious as to how you guys store larger catches (butts, WSB, tails, etc) both on the kayak and transporting them home. Ive seen guys with bags strapped to the front of the kayak that hold ice. But where do you guys put your catch on the way home if it’s too large to fit in a cooler? Any tips welcomed as always.
Thanks!
Tight lines,
Johnny

I don’t have a large enough cooler. I bought ice, jetted from mission bay to shelter island pier cleaning station, filleted. Then it fit in the cooler. Since then I carry a couple of industrial garbage bags. You can throw very large fish and ice and reduce the after smells in the car. That’s how I took care of the sevengill.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...ba67314b5f.jpg
How’s that Mitchell?

Did you save the Arkansas toothpick?

MITCHELL 02-06-2018 12:23 PM

No...is that a bone or a knife, because I left the third knife to this set sitting on a rock deer h.

I usually throw a big Rubbermaid bin in the back of the SUV when I make a trip. Usually it is just my wet & nasty clothes, pfd, etc that goes in there. But if I get something that does not fit in a medium size cooler then it can double as a bin to ice down my prize. Space is not much of an issue as smaller loose stuff, tackle bag, etc can go inside

What solution do you use to tan your hides?

MITCHELL 02-06-2018 03:53 PM

Clean hide scrape as much fat and skin off as you can with out making holes, they make a special tool for that rise in dish soap water nail to a board flat and scape some more, salt hide heavy and let sit over night, next day put in warm water and scrap again then mix the pickle 1gallon water in a tub 1pound aluminum sulfate
In another bucket mix 4oz of washing soda in 1/2 gal
of water and mix together stir with a stick soak hide 4 days then rise in 1or2 oz of borax soap and a gallon of water, and back on a board aply warm tanning oil I would suggest Google it for instructions.this is only my second raccoon I have tanned period no other animals

:rolleyes: I always have an empty cooler in the back and just this weekend I was wondering where to put my wet clothes and that didn’t even occur to me.

(Second non-LJ surf landing and I got wet again... Didnt flip this time, but I forgot just how quickly Tamarack beach north of both jetties gets deep... figured I was close enough and I’d get out and walk it in the rest of the way. Nope! Couldn’t touch the bottom and had to swim along side in front of all the beach goers until I got a closer. Yeah, I meant to do that...)

I’m going to start doing that as I have plenty of room for it. Thanks for the help!

I caught a 33 and 36 lb yt the other day and of course did not have the truck or the ice chest. No bag, no towel, only a nice clean Subaru Outback. What to do? I turned my waders inside out, put a yellow tail head first in each leg, and droppped in 2 bags of ice per leg, threw it in the back and off I went.

MITCHELL 02-07-2018 05:17 AM

And no.......

Here are the Yellows and my wadders, but you will have to imagine what it would look like with the fish in them. The bite was hot that morning. Not much pressure, not many yaks and maybe 2 boats. Just solid yellows on the iron. Sounds like the word got out and the bite died after the full moon.
