Lowrance HDS5 FF

Does anyone have one of these or know of their quality?

Drake 11-18-2012 03:47 PM

Quite a few of us have them, however sometimes I come across people on the water who have no idea what they are looking at or how to read them. They take some time and understanding to dial in. I'll be the first to admit, I had to have someone completely redo mine for me. But after a while you start to get the hang of what you're looking at, although even after 5 months with mine, and using it 3-4 days a week there are still things I know I'm missing.

I feel like it's similar buying a REALLY nice expensive camera and shooting it on Auto mode, you're not doing yourself any favors unless you become a master of it. If you're just using it for depth, temp and finding bait balls, save your self the money. But if you dial it in properly and take the time to undestand everything about the unit, it will change the way you fish.

A buddy of mine is going to sell me his for $85. He has two on his boat and is moving the main unit to the front, and buying a new one for the steering area. Thus leaving this one for me. I was rather shocked, speachless when he told me he'd sell it for that low of a price. So, I will be learning all he tricks of that thing. Thanks for the info, hopefully we can hook up on the water sometime.

Agreed he is a good friend to give you a deal like that.
So when are we going fishing jimmy now that you have a yak and a finder?

Jimmyz123 11-19-2012 07:01 AM

I'm going to try and take the Kayak out this weekend for a quick 1st run on it. Not sure if I'll do La Jolla or stick to one of the bays. I have to see what the family plans are first.

What Drake said is spot on. Take your time, dial it in.

For $85.00 - grab it and go get the Navionic's platinum+ and you are good to go.

I about fell off his boat when he told me he would sell it to me for cheap. I was like what's the catch? So I have stopped looking for a FF, because from all that I have researched I'm getting a great system.

oneyedeer 11-19-2012 11:53 AM

maybe he doesn't want you on his boat anymore ;)

I doubt that one. He's a Pro fishing guide here in San Diego and twice a year at our Christian First Light Fishing events he take people out for free. Offering to sell me that nice of a FF for $85 it like him paying me to go on his boat.

Old Man in the Sea 11-20-2012 11:35 AM

pay it forward???
