cast net

hello has anyone dealt with using a cast net out of a yak.
i would like to give it a try for when im live baiting stripers.

On the west coast here, Cast nets are illegal to use!

If your striper fishing on the east coats i know they are legal. but may depend on witch state you live in.

JMJ,

You probably did not get the notice when you emigrated from the East. Here in California, if it is is intoxicating, erotic, entertaining, politically sensitive or just plain useful, there is probably some law that makes it illegal or imposes some sort of fee or tax on the activity.

Welcome to the Golden State.

if u go to Mex ya can, which is why walmart in Cali carries them?!..
F-ing ridiculous that u can't use them here..thanks F&G!..

i find the smaller diameter nets easier for me ..the 8-12' mothers do me just fine.i can get it to open completely and not huck myself overboard too..
When on land I use a bigger one of course..

Wade, I do believe it is against Mexican law to throw cast nets,in Mexico, unless you are a Mexican National....don't do it!

You can use cast nets north of Point Conception, but not in So Cal. I lived in North Carolina a few years ago and learned to throw a cast net seated in a kayak. It wasn't real easy but I made it work. I was usually in shallow water in creeks and marshes so I didn't need a wide fast sinking net. Your wind up is reduced, you can't use your legs, and you can't really follow through your throw so you really have to focus on your hands and get a good spin going early in the cast and then let go early so the momentum doesn't carry you off ballance, like maybe right out of the yak. I used a small net, like 4 or 5 feet diameter and didn't try to throw it too far. Small menhaden and shrimp aren't too smart so mostly all I needed to do was get the net spinning to open it up and then drop it fairly close to the side of the yak. If I tried to throw far the net would often "taco" or not land on the water flat. It's not a great analogy, but think of a guying tossing a pizza dough. He gets it spinning and moving up, then he catches it. I sort of spun the net up and then let it land just a few feet from the boat. Mike

I think I've seen some cast net tutorials or video on the Texas Kayak Fisherman site: http://www.texaskayakfisherman.com/forum/portal.php
It won't do you any good in SoCal, but its good stuff to know if you get stationed back on the East Coast or the Gulf Coast.

I believe the castnets and a no go in SoCal. I remember running into that in DFG booklet.

Learn what you got at your disposal, thanks CJ

Learn how to find them and get 'em in quick notes by Masta' Stand Up And Say, (photo credit Chris, Doug, Corey, Adi, sorry if I missed someone... :))
Print it, mount it on a wall of your kayak or da boat, forget the net :D
