LJ Yellowtail - October 11th (video)

Same story... lots of bait, but difficult to make. Around 12:30 was heading in with a flylined spanish mack, fishing 65 spectra to 100 yards of 30lb mono to 6 ft of 30lb floro. I've been having great results with this set up. Knowing mono is not the way to go, I tried to stay out of the kelp but on the way back got picked up near the kelp in 100ft of water. Got stuck in the kelp a little bit but managed to get the fish out somehow... 18lbs on my home scale. Middle brother was absent, so big bro helped with gaffing the fish. There is a word for the gaff scene in the video, "cluster f....".

Why don't you guys just gaff your own fish? Seems like there's a lot more that can go wrong with two kayaks involved

Just to share the fun... I enjoy watching people fighting fish. If they let me gaff for them, id be stoked.

so stoked, gaffing a meaty fish from a yak is one of the most gratifying things ever....my roommates and I do that most of the time - its fun to chase the other around hooting and hollering

Huh didn't think of it that way! Wish I could get my brothers out on the yak, would be too much fun

Better yet. Just grab his ass and don't put a big hole in the meat!!

dmrides 10-13-2014 02:25 PM

Better better yet, gaff them in the gills and start 'em bleeding right away!

But you are right, it is a ton of fun to grab them by their motor.

Nice fish ashmoz! Your videos always rock and your crew are the most stoked guys on the water.

Nice Meeting You

Nice job Ashmoz...I'm the one who came in and landed with you and your friend. Also, I drug a few hard earned greenbacks around all morning sometimes crossing your path. No luck for me though. The water was really clear out there on Saturday so that extra shot of mono may have been what worked for you. I was 65-lb braid straight to hook while overcast then added 4-ft of 30-lb floro when it became totally bright.

Dude you were in the danger zone with that gaff technique but pulled it off :cheers:
