Pelagic stingray

My last report was short so I added to the end of it instead of starting a new one. Scroll about half way down until you see June 27, 2020.

This was a wild catch. Not sure it was a good idea though, haha.

You mean at that point, it didn't start to beat you and the kayak badly! The ones I've seen close are like Hali's once at the surface, watch out.

Did you eat it? Or has anyone on here?

No, I let it go.

I've been known to eat fish other people don't like, but I've never had the urge to try a bat ray because processing the fish is going to be a ton of work.

Skate wings is a thing, but if you're going to try it, try it with a smaller model.

Whatever you do, it won't be worse than eating an opaleye :eating:

BenCantrell 06-30-2020 02:04 PM

Lol, what's wrong with opaleye? I took a big one home once, and it was great.

+1. I will definitely bring home opaleye from the reef on the regular.
Also-in doing research on scallops, I recently learned that if you’ve eaten them in a restaurant, you’ve probably had some form of ray cut into scallops shaped pieces and served as such

Pelagic rays might be the tastiest of rays considering where they spend their time and what they eat.

Jaja. I have taken opaleye diving, but I just don't like the taste. I'm not averse to "coarse fish," as I'll eat spotfin croakers any day (good for tacos!), and I just made some damn good shime saba rolls out of salami-sized greenbacks; but the opaleye just doesn't do it for me.

BenCantrell, you should host a bat ray cookout at pioneer park next time you're onto a 150# mud marlin. I'll bring the Model Zero ;)

I love OpoBass.... use to catch them off the rocks as a kid on muscle or green peas. Not a fish for fillets, but mighty fine baked whole. Stingrays are a spoiler -- Hard fighting disappointment when you get it in.

I got sick once after eating one, it may have been too close to a red tide, so exercise caution in the months following, especially if it came from a shallow bay.

That said, I've eaten plenty of rays before, and this was the only one that I got sick from, also it was on the larger side, which I would recommend avoiding, as the cartilage can be too tough for quick cooking methods and is probably better cooked separately as in shark fin soup.

Opes are dope.

Here is one of my favorite youtubers.

Are we talking pelagic stingray or some other ray?

On further review, it could have been a longtail stingray.

I may have been mistaken.
