Dana Point July-6

Got on the water at 6am to try to beat some of the crowd, seas were perfect with little to no wind so I headed north to headlands / salt creek area. Made a few drift for the flat kind. Got a big bite that I fought for about a minute before it got tangled in some kelp. Tried all the tricks I knew but couldn't get him out. Broke off my gear. After half an hour decided to try some bass. They were hittin pretty good with several awesome surface strikes. Got a total of 9 with most being cookie cutter 13.5 inches ( guess the new laws are working) and my biggest at Bout 17 inches. All released to grow. Side note: I saw a mako shark go air born feeding about 300 yards offshore from me. It was badass. Headed in at noon fighting all the boat/seadoo/paddle board traffic. It was a mad house in the harbor. Over all a pretty good day.

PS. What tricks do you guys use when you get Kepled up on a big fish?

I can only speak from my first experience yesterday, July 5th.
Keep the rod doubled over and keep the pressure on. Take your time.
