What to do with Guitarfish?

What do you guys do when you land a 40" guitarfish (aka shovelnose)?

Are there any special handling instructions? Bleed them right away? Recipes?

I don't "fret" about guitarfish, especially when you get them by the "bridge". Make sure they are legal and handle them like you would a shark. Bleed and fillet ASAP. They are very good eating.

bleed and fillet....a lil olive oil and pepper and then spring roll them very yummy

My friends and I had a trip a few weeks-ago where we were landing legal-sized guitarfish every few minutes. We didn't know what to do with them so we threw them all back.

All-told, we probably landed about 250-300 lbs of guitarfish.

Now that I know what we can do with them... :drool5:

It's bad for me because I'm entertaining out-of-town guests who are scurred of "deep" ocean water and prefer to stay inside the bays - otherwise I'd be out there hunting YT/WSB! :the_finger:

Beggars can’t be choosers! I’m about to eat salt and pepper sardines from the bait barge :D I wish Josh would get back to me so I could go get some of them yellowtails I've been hearing so much about.

I've heard that they can be really good, I guess its all in the seasoning.

makobob 07-23-2013 11:49 AM

Diabetic's drink coke?

There is NO size limit to shovelnose guitarfish.

Leopard shark has to be 36", but not SGF.

I have heard that the meat parallel to the back bone make a great ceviche.

the shovel nose shout can be made into a nice pair of flip flops if it is dried properly....;)

People have reported even bat rays are fantastic eating when you punch little scallops out of the wings with a cookie cutter :leaving:

When we had a fish fry a week or 2 later we put a few pieces in the batter a fried iit up. To my surprise it tadted like deep fried clams:confused: Ive seen deep fried clams sold at different resteraunts so that was pretty cool. I have no doubt that not everyone would enjoy that taste though. All in all though they are a lot of work to deal with while on a kayak (or float tube), I would rather just release.
