Imperial Beach, Silver Strand & Coronado Beach

Does anyone launch and fish in these areas by kayak?

For this coming Monday & Tuesday, waves are predicted in those areas to be 1.5' high, 16 sec intervals.

I enjoy moving around for variety and was wondering if these might be good areas to look for halibut this time of year?<table align="center"><tbody><tr></tr><tr><td valign="top" align="center">

Further information. Any experience or opinions about this?

1. From my news alerts today from SD Reader:

Quote:

Halibut are biting along the reefs in the sandier areas in 20 to 60 feet of water, and up to the surf line on the weeks during the grunion runs. This is the time of year when catching a legal ‘but from shore while surf fishing is most possible. Try early mornings after the peak grunion run; the tide will be low by then and coming up. You want to fish the cuts and holes that are reachable while the tide is at the bottom, and then work behind the breaking waves as the tide rises through the morning. Another option is to fish directly behind the grunion at night during the run. For the best results, try a live bait on a Carolina rig, or lures that best mimic grunion; clear/green swimbaits, Krokadile-type spoons, or crankbaits in flashy, blue/green colors.

2. Next predicted grunion schedule begins Tuesday May 29th:
May 29 9:15pm - 11:15pm
May 30 10:10pm - 12:10am
May 31 10:45pm - 12:45am

I’ve never launched out of silver strand the waves are usually too rough but I’d bet it’s a great area to look for halibut. Bring a good kayak cart because the water is a long way off from the parking lot.

And grunion run is a great time to target halibut.

Yes, and that's why the forecast for flat & easy waves piqued my interest to share this information and launch this thread for some feed back.

The forcast for waves and intervals are the same for Silver Strand and Coronado Beaches.

Imperial Beach used to be famous for halibut (and for sewage spills coming up form the Tijuana River). Lots of places used to be famous that are nothing special now. I don't know if this area is currently productive or not.

My PB Hali was caught south of IB pier.

I launched on the north side of IB peir...

Loaded up with mackerel at the tip of peir and paddled out to the kelp beds, for no takers.Only saw one boat
I didn't have a graph. I did that twice second time coming in I got slammed pretty good. Most of the time it was to big to get out.
There's :wsb::yt: ect in IB kelp beds

Another time I launched from Coronado next to the Naval base

Paddled out to zuniga jettie .It was a train wreck coming in I had a wet suit on,almost jurked my arm out of socket
Holding on to my kayak.
That was back in my scupper pro days

I would suggest launching from avienda del sol 1 blk. south of Hotel Del. only a skip and a jump to the ocean compared to the rest of Coronados access points. I have not launched from there yet, but would only go when the surf is less than 2 feet high. the Coronado closeouts could pose a challenge on the paddle out.
