How many rods?

I have a question for everyone, How many rods do you take out with you and how many do you use at once? I have found that it is obviously easier to use one, but it is always nice to have that one you forget about until you hear the clicker go off.

1 for the bass, 1 for the bottom, 1 for the iron, 1 for the sabiki. 4 total

It depends on what I am fishing for.

I usually have one rod dedicated to catching bait (unless I hit a bait barge)

Then I will have two rods set up for my target fish. Sometimes a forth with an iron or swim bait.

Sometimes I fish one rod at a time and others I may have two out. Depends on what I am fishing for and the current. One rod is easier to manage but two rods doubles your chance of a hook up. If the two rods lines entangle each other, then you have a mess on your hands.

X2. If I'm drifting I'll have 1 on the bottom and a second either fly lining a Mac. or throwing an Iron. If paddling I'll just troll 1.

I always carry the same three, two to fish with and one sabiki rod

Hawkman 03-04-2014 12:52 PM

1 flyline, 1 bottom, 1 iron/swim bait, 1 sabiki. I like only one bait rod at at time when fishing large finbait especially macs

Squid Vicious 03-04-2014 12:56 PM

1 swimbait for harbour (3" hammer)
1 swimbait for kelp tops (4" hammer)
1 swimbait for the bottom (5" hammer)
1 iron
.....I don't use bait on my kayak...but on my boat I almost exclusively use bait except the occasional iron toss
.....being relatively new to kayak fishing still...I'm not ready for a bait tank...I mostly hunt bass on the kayak anyway

Good info

Everyone is pretty much on the same page, be it 3-4 rods. I normally take out 3 rods also. 2 for the primary target and one for bait.

Usually I keep it simple with one bottom setup (Avet/Calstar), and one combo bass/flyline/whatever's needed (Curado/Terez) setup. Sometimes one sabiki setup if I'm not hitting the bait barge.

Dannowar 03-04-2014 01:08 PM

as of late.....2 jig sticks

usually, one for every kind of fish i wanna catch

Hondatom 03-04-2014 02:11 PM

1 set up with a Sabiki rig
1 with a Small spinning reel for ez flipping
1 with a Calcutta set up for the bottom.

I usually top those off with very little skill and even less luck!
Good thing I like to paddle.

Bert Vega 03-04-2014 02:48 PM

I only own 5 rods total. So I bring them all with me.

Dannowar 03-04-2014 02:54 PM

Depends on where I'm fishing. When I'm in the bay I have a sabiki in case I see a bait ball below me in the deeper parts of the bay, a lighter baitcaster with leadhead grubs for the sbb. And a bigger swimbait for the sandies/halibut.

sandydiego 03-04-2014 04:27 PM

1 sabiki setup that can be converted to troll
1 9 ft Jig for throwing lures (this seems to attract all the f'n power boaters)
1 for the bottom
1 Flyfish rod
1 for trolling
12 gauge marine shotgun (fur shootin power boaters)

I'm going out in the bay tomorrow. You free? Shoot me a text if you want to join.

Cadillyak 03-04-2014 07:11 PM

Damn Todd, u kill me with these weekdays. Lucky you!

MrM 03-04-2014 08:13 PM

Three for me. Four is one too many for my setup, it always ends up getting in the way.

We'll get out there one of these Sundays. The bay's going to be wide open soon.
