Using the RipTide to launch?
 

So, 1st of, I'm a newbie. 2nd, I finally have my 1st kayak (used 2015Hobie PA14).

So, is it safe to use the rip current on shore to launch from?.

I've seen many different rips and a few come factors are;
- lesser size waves as compared to adjacent waves
- out going current to aid in launch
- current usually ends past the area where shore waves can be a factor during the launch process.

Any ideas always welcome. I never stop learning.

I've launched during rip currents once or twice, the problem that I encountered was that the outgoing current would force the back of the kayak to go sideways so I would constantly have to adjust the angle of the kayak or I'd end up parallel to the waves.

The Escalator!
 

The rip tide (or escalator) is a great way to speed launch through the surf zone and is a preferred method for me if available.

But....

1. As mentioned, the current can make steering funky. Avoid using the rudder if problems occur. Use paddle to steer. Keep the nose forward!

2. Note, any surf can have lateral currents that create similar sudden steering problems.

3. The outer waves coming into a rip can stand-up higher quickly. Use good timing....but...mostly CHARGE! It's hard to "wait in the surf" with that escalator pushing you at them.

4. You should practice kayaking in surf sans fishing gear if this is to be your thing. Be able to withstand sideways waves to some degree. Learn to brace.

I don't no about launching in a rip tide
 

But launching my canoe in la jolla is a SOB....at low tide.
The current pulls the bow south i think the canyon has something to do with that. I can't hold it straight to hop in, its 17ft long it's a piece of cake if someone holds my bow till I hop in and grab my oars.
