Throwing flies in the 'Bu, Sunday, 2/28/2016

I only had an hour or two but I caught a bunch of fish.

I ended up with an even dozen of "rat" sized calico and johnny bass, and also one legal calico, probably about 16". Also two new species, one was a googly-eyed smelt, and I'm still trying to figure out what the other one was.

Started fishing with an olive over white streamer, but no hits after a dozen casts, so I switched to the only red fly that I had as I heard the red tuna crabs are back in force. Trying to match the hatch.

Sure enough, first cast, first calico. For the next 1/2 hour or so I got hit on what seemed like just about every cast.

Then it started getting a little darker, and it was really foggy, so I bailed!

Really fun!

Thanks for the report,

I was out there last week and caught a couple of smelt on orange clousers but missed the bass.

Thanks guys! Hit me up sometime and we can go out together.

I've often found that the bass are on the up current side of the kelp, usually on the outside edge of the kelp. Though I have seen and hooked calico all throughout the kelp, I do think the ocean-side edge has the most potential.

I've hooked bonita and cuda out there too and have seen large schools of schoolie-sized yellowtail.

Now I just need a good fish finder/gps to find the rocks, reefs, and wrecks!

Andy
