Red tide?

Does anyone know if the red tide is in at LJ right now? Thursday 9/5

I was off Crystal Pier on Tuesday, and north of the pier, very bad red, south of the pier not so bad.

I've been in the SD bay the last 2 nights. It's been glowing! I was wondering how I should be changing my style under these conditions. The bite has drastically turned off once night comes. I go from 10 fish an hour to zero. Kinda frustrating.

yes, it is thickening up.......

I've only found one color bait that works (sorta) in a Red Tide. Glow in the Dark. White might work too. Go figure.

Point loma and silverstrand had some pretty big red patches from what I can see while driving over the coronado bridge

The right time of year for it! Here is a pic I took at LJ back in 2000, NOAA used it for their red tide website, and its been published in several books. Same species...

I thought someone had spilled marinara.

is it up in the bay? towards tidelands? or still out in the open ocean

djphaneuf 09-06-2013 01:52 PM

Went out today and it was a ghost town. Just felt dead. Caught nothing but Spanish and Bonito while trying to get bait. Went out to NW corner and beyond but it never cleared up for me.

We were out yesterday, the red tide is sporadic at LJ, but some spots were the densest and darkest red rust color that I've ever seen in 44 years of fishing on the ocean including a period off of Redondo a few decades ago, where red tide existed every day for over 3 months, of course ruining the fishing then.

At the inside areas, the water was definitely not the same good clarity, as 2 weeks ago, but there were some fairly clear areas. The red tide was sporadic all the way to the NW corner, but as we got to that spot, there were areas where the red tide didn't exist at all.

We'll post our fishing report later today. We managed some bottom fish. The "right" kind might have been quite affected by the water temperature, as well as the red tide, as it seems colder than normal for this time of the year as it did on Aug 23rd, our 1st trip of the year.

Does anyone know if the Bioluminescence is still in the bay? And are we talking Mission or SD bay?

kixchad 09-07-2013 08:26 PM

dinoflagellates. Time to get a jar of sea water. Keep em in fridge with the light on and shake the jar at night. Or take em to bio class and check those bastards under the microscope.
