Red snapper on kayak

Do you guys know if it is feasible to catch red snappers (not rock fish) on a kayak? What kind of bait to use and at what depth? I launch off Newport Beach.

It's a long paddle to the Gulf from newport beach! You're better off driving to Texas to launch from there. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...8a5cff7218.jpg

I think the name "red snapper" is being used to identify many kind of fishes. Sure, the warm-water loving red snappers are over there but what I'm talking about here is "pacific red snapper" (scientific name Lutjanus Peru).

It sounds like those are in Peru then! 😉

There's like 100 rockfish species and some of them people call snapper over here. Same shit. Don't make it all scientific, just drop the squid down and see what bites. If you're lucky like me, you'll drift off the rocks and catch damn sand dabs and lizard fish!

I got some sand dabs last weekend too. They are kinda small though? I caught them at 230 ft.

If you go right of the bouy, it's sand dab city over there.

I've never seen or heard of that particular pacific red snapper being caught around here.

Great foto of the paddle to catch red snapper. I have never heard if any member of the Lutjanus family caught in CA waters. The closest snapper to Cali are in the sea of cortez. Many species there. Mike

Lol. Huachinango. You could definitely find them in the sea of Cortez. Time to join one of our Baja trips...

According to a site I was looking at last night rock fish on the pacific coast is sold as red snapper. It isn't the same as atlantic red snapper but out here all rock fish can be sold as red snapper.

kayakfisherman 06-04-2016 05:49 PM

They may not be called red snappers, per se, our coast
is full of these. Plus they can be found in shallow waters.
Plus they are super easy to catch and just as tasty as
any Gulf Coast Red Snapper.

Even a Cave Man like Gabe can do it!
