kelp anchor
I got a Q for you folks. This sunday i went fishing off Malibu, The day started great but by late morning the wind picked up. It felt as if every time i stoped the wind would bush me back about 2+mph. How do you anchor your self to the kelp?? Any pics of what you use??
Any other ideas about how to slow the drift in the kelp of the open water?? |
Just grab a handful and tuck it under your leg.

look in the innovations thread. Someone posted about using a cable cuff

Works for me too. |
I use this. http://www.basspro.com/Brush-Gripper...t/1441/-269763
But I like the idea of the one mentioned above with the float on it too. |
grab a string of kelp, tie a simple palomar knot, then use a carbinger clipped to the side handle of your yak and clip it to the knot on the kelp.

Only thing I would suggest is to be careful when you are tied up to kelp... The current will work against the kelp and swell against you. When they get just right you can be flipped over if your line has no stretch. Heard a story about all the wrong things happening at the same time. And he had his front hatch open at the time, so he flooded his kayak.

I have tried to tie the kelp but it would break off easy. Didnt try to hold it with my leg but did grab a big chunk and got it with the game clip and a bungi just to have some break and the rest would just slid right out. Going to hit the hardware store and see if i come up with some ideas.

Most of the time I just grab a stringer, wrap it around the rod extenders in my flush mounts and then cinch it down with my paddle keeper bungy on the side of the yak. I have also used a surfboard leash. Keep it simple

This weekend I figured out that if I take a strand from each side of the boat and pin one under each foot, I can hold my position and keep the bow pointed in the direction I want it to be. Just gotta make sure that the strands don't get tangled around the foot pegs.
