La Jolla trip 8/13/2011
Launched at the cove at 5:30AM to ankle-slappers, flat ocean and overcast skies. Stayed overcast most of the day.<O:p</O:p
Made about 8 mackeral a piece for bait, a few good sized Spanish and large to porn-sized greenies, all leftovers will be saved for the upcoming bug season.<O:p</O:p Trolled with the macks high and low, all morning for nothing. We may have seen one yellow puddling, but whatever it was, it was unresponsive to the iron.<O:p</O:p To not have the day be a total loss, meat-wise, we tried bottom fishing. Aaron also soaked a live mack, just in case the yellows showed for an afternoon bite, no such luck.<O:p</O:p Aaron catches bottom fish fast, with Julie starting slow. She ends up passing him, with 7 to his 6. Not unusual, she out-fishes him, he taught her too well.<O:p</O:p While bottom-fishing we saw what looked like a Fin-back whale a 1/2 mile away, nice when mother nature makes a showing. Not so nice, having to deal with a 6 foot, seven gill shark Julie fought. She brought it alongside her kayak, but we decided to bust it off, instead of trying to retrieve the $6 jig he had in his mouth. <O:p</O:p Ended up with 12 rockcod (variety),and 1 sheephead, together. Here are a couple of photos.<O:p</O:p On the water shot<O:p</O:p http://i745.photobucket.com/albums/x...kcodondeck.jpg <O:p</O:p Driveway shot<O:p</O:p http://i745.photobucket.com/albums/x...rivewaycod.jpg </O:p Landed about 7:00PM, 13 ½ hours on the water. Yeah, we’re sore today.<O:p</O:p Picked up a pound of shrimp on the way home to go with the sheephead and 2 smallest rockcod, all done tempura-style. Fish tacos to come later.<O:p</O:p Aaron has been prone to sun-poisoning on his shins the past 3 years, anyone recognize his shin protectors in the 1st photo? |

Good day on the water. Didnt know that the seven gills ranged this far south. I always heard about guys catching them in SF bay when I lived up north but didnt know they were down here too!

Nice haul of taco meat and I know the feeling on the sun poisoning as I too must "cover-up" whenever going out.
