Bottle Rockets??

I was on my in yesterday afternoon wishing that I could of stayed out for one or two more hours knowing I would of eventually found 'em. The sun had just come out and I was on my way in from my calm and peaceful day on the water to have dinner with the in-laws:eek:

As I entered the preserve, I heard what I thought was morons launching bottle rockets from somewhere. After the third one I look to my right and there were a few divers waving to me while using their safety whistle. I cruise over and see whats wrong, they were missing one of the 4 divers and had been on the surface for 15 minutes already. This is where having a cell phone handy really makes an important difference.

They were not sure if I should call 911, but I thought it would be best, just in case. I called and had them transfer me to the Lifegaurd. Within 10 minutes 2 LG's were on scene on a jet ski, 5 minutes later a boat and helicopter were on scene. Nothing left for me to do, so I headed in. The FD was on the beach and ready to help if anything bad happened.

Before heading off I asked a LG if they had found the missing diver and they did! They did and awesome job! Even though I just made a simple phone call it felt pretty good to help them out. I'm just hoping for some karma points for the tourney!:D

When in doubt..............

I'm sure I would have called 911 immediately. I hate reading stories that say, "emergency personnel believe they may have saved a life if they would have arrived sooner".

Good call and glad everyone was OK.

maybe a mod could ensure Karma points are awarded...

Thanks for your help! I bet a specific diver is especially grateful!:notworthy:

Definitely good on your for making the call...worst thing that happens is some rescue personell have to get off their butts and take a drive....(in no way knocking any emergency rescue personnel or their jobs, as i am trying to become a firefighter myself, but we all know there is a lot of downtime in those fields). Always better safe then sorry. Definite good karma comin your way.

Missing Diver

You made the right decision to call.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
Does anyone know the rest of the story? Was the diver in danger or just separated from his buddies and doing the remaining dive solo?
I learned that you need to discuss your dive plan in advance of the dive with your buddy, specifically what to do if you get separated. When diving in these murky waters, different divers have different approaches, but the important thing to do is to have a pre-dive plan.

Good for you bro. Good luck in the tournament.

I believe they got seperated. They did have a dive plan, I think that helped. From what the divers were saying, the other diver that was lost was ascending rapidly and his "buddy" didn't want to go up that fast. It seemed they had a "search for 1 minute and surface" plan. I'm no diver so I can't get to technical about it. I'm not sure if the lost guy had and difficulties.

petemaranda 08-25-2011 03:48 PM

Super kind of you to be caring enough to help out. Thanks!

As for the cell phone, it seems everytime I have heard someone calling the Coast Guard for assistance on 16, they ask if the person has a cell phone they can call back on.

I always carry mine, ringer off of course.
