WTB Kayak Storage Hanger
Does anyone know where to get a good pully system with the ties for a kayak hanger?
Or have one for sell? or know a good way to make one? |
I was looking at this one. . .
Wife is bugging about the kayak in the garage taking up space. Saw this in a catalog, I'm almost certain this will be my father's day gift.

I had something very similar for my Outback and it worked great. However, it wasn't strong enough for the Oasis. I bought mine from REI. Pretty easy to install in the garage, especially if you have the exposed beams. But might not work if you have a tall vehicle. It worked perfectly with my Prius. It fit under the suspended kayak.

I bought mine from REI. I don't think it would work for the PA, my Oasis was too heavy for it. But it should work for your Mini X.

i just went to harbor freight on wed and put together a hanging system.
i bought a pack of ratcheting straps (comes with 4, only needed 2, other 2 will be used to transport the yak on the car) for $12.99 (on sale) i bought a pack of cam lock lashing straps (comes with 2, only needed 1) for $2 i hooked the ratcheting straps to a wire shelf storage system i have suspended from my garage ceiling. if you don't have a shelf system, you can probably buy brackets and an S-hook from home depot for cheap. looks similar to this: http://www.austinkayak.com/images/pr.../large/133.jpg except mine's right side up and the 1 lashing strap ties the two ratcheting suspenders together. think of the letter "H" |

BEWARE of ratcheting straps while used to tie down the Yak for transport. You can damage your Yak if you really torque down those ratchets! For this reason, I only use this type of strap: http://www.kayakfishingsupplies.com/...ps-15ft/Detail |

I will have to post some pics but I got the parts for my whole system at Home Depot. First I measured out the span I wanted which was about
2 1/2' in from each end of kayak. Screwed into ceiling studs 4 eyebolts ($1ea) approx. 2-3 ft. apart from each other. Bought 2 self locking pulleys (around $8 ea. if I remember) and attached to 2 of the eyebolts with the longer span. Tied rope to eyebolt leaving ceiling to floor loop that goes back up through pully with enough tail to grab onto. Length will vary to ceiling height(mine 8'). I just slide kayak through the 2 loops and hoist away just going so far with each one so kayak doesnt slide out. Kayak is up against ceiling and out of the way. Could easily fit 4 kayaks in my 2 car garage that way. Hey I only got one, maybe time to increase my fleet:drool5:. Thats the best I can do to describe it w/o pics since Iam at work the next few days but it works great, cheap and took all of 20 min. to do. Tim |
Still looking for ceiling hangers? I may have a pair of the "pulley hoist 884" for sale.
