what up fellas, just starting out on kayak fishing thinking of launching out of la jolla whats a good kayak for a newbie around $500?

Search around you will find something around your budget loaded
Look at the Ocean kayak they make some great ones
if you went to spend the extra cash get yourself a hobie

thanks man ill check it out whats a must to have on your kayaks?

your PFD(Life vest)
a radio
maybe a dry bag
if you get some pole holders go with scotty or ram mounts and get yourself some rod leashes
Once you get the funds I would say get a bait tank first or make one
then a fish finder
every now and then OEX does a day on the water to where you can test drive some of their kayaks
sometimes when you buy a kayak all rigged up yes it will be nice but you want something you feel at home
something I always remember when I am buying a kayak
long+skinny= fast
short+fat= stable
it all depends on what kind of fishing you plan on doing
My hobie PA I can stand up in 3'-6' swells and take a piss no problem

If you want to learn some great things read threw a lot of peoples forums
If you want to watch some videos on youtube all about kayak fishing

yeah im not too worried about going fast maybe more stable, the guy i talked to said a longer kayak will take swells better and talked me in to getting a 9' seeker inshore blue, but i know no matter what i get i need to get use to it.

Most people I go out with either as a malibu, ocean kayak, or a hobie

what will you be transporting your kayak with?

i have a SUV and a short bed truck I like the look of the wilderness systems kayaks are those any good?

Wilderness kayaks are great kayaks by what I have herd.
I have never been on one.
I have only used an ocean kayak and now my Hobie Pro Angler
If you want to go with a brand new wilderness I would honestly tell you to go for a hobie revo or a hobie outback for almost the same price you get something that you peddle

I am by far any expert I have only been kayak fishing for a year.

hey man, I just started yak fishing about four months ago and just went through this thing. go to oex mission bay and demo some boats. roll em, get back in em, fish on em. I started with short and fat cuz i felt stability was really important and tried the malibu stealth 12 and 14and liked em, lots of deck space and storage. Then I checked out some of the narrower boats the ocean kayak prowler 13 and 15 and wilderness systems tarpon 140 and 160. The difference in speed and ease of paddle is dramatic. I hit up la jolla every weekend and will easily paddle 6 miles. It is draining and I can't imagine doing it on a short fat boat. I have yet to pull on anything big but have never felt close to tipping even in heavy swell. I ended up with the tarpon 160 cuz it felt the best for me on the water...my other option was the prowler 15. The hobies offer alot of advantages but were out of my range...i think around $500 more. I thought about used also...my yak was just under $1000 but with paddle and leashes, gaff, mounts, fishfinder/battery, built a bait tube it was probably over $1500 plus a car rack that was like $350. You can probably get most of that gear with a used yak for like $800 (not roof rack or paddle). I chose new cuz a lifetime warranty makes things easy and I wanted to build it up just how I wanted. Do what is best for your needs but you will know so much more once you paddle them.

I own a wilderness systems myself the tarpon 160... I love it and have no regrets except the rear storage is a little tight for my needs. I can paddle all day and get where I wanna go quickly(faster than peddling). I started on a cobra fish n dive and quickly upgraded to a narrower faster kayak. There is a tarpon 160 on here for sale its a great deal! I recommend jumping on that
