Eastern Sierra - Rock Creek Lake

Hey BWE,

Made our drive up the 395 in good time on Thursday afternoon, but the wind was blowing like a mofo. We ran up the mountain at Bishop to see what the conditions were like, and it was blown out big time up there.

This is only my second time to the Eastern Sierra's so was not really sure where to go, but took advice from some fellow anglers and a camp host and headed up to Rock Creek to try and escape the wind.

Set up camp and tried to sleep. Woke up at around 6:30 and headed straight up to Rock Creek Lake and launched the yaks.

Very Scenic view, and the wind was blowing, but it was fishable.

Not 5 minutes in and bendo - first of many DFG stockers

Didn't take many more pics, cause the fish were all cookie cutters with the larger fish going just over 1 pound. The fish were small but plentiful. Had a great day on Rock Creek Lake. Metered some big fish, but could not entice them to bite. Does this lake have large Catfish or some other species that gets very large?

Hit up Rock Creek the next morning after breakfast and was treated to some awesome scenery and beautiful native rainbows.

Packed up on Sunday and hit the road, but stopped by Intake 2 on the way back and fished the float tube for a couple of hours. Got a couple of Browns. Talked to a local who said that they had just drained intake 2 last week, but after they refilled it DFG had stocked it several times, once with larger than usual rainbows.

Yeah, that area is alot of fun! I want to hike into the back country next time I go up there. Catching a nice Golden has been added to the bucket list.

Rock Creek Lake has some pretty big browns and they plant some huge alpers each year. My guess is you were metering some lunker alpers.

the wife and I were backpacking frequently before kids:rolleyes:
there are some spots up there holding some real nice rainbows, goldens, and browns....natives. They are animals once hooked, no lack of action either.

We would pack in up to 8 miles and make camp. Then take day hikes to higher and even more remote glacier lakes...crystal clear water. No monsters but like I said, no lack of action.

I love the eastern sierras, some of the most beautiful scenery and good fishing. have spent a good amount of time backpacking and fishing out there. I have a spot that is a two day hike to get too but it has some lunker golden trout!

Nice job on the fish!

thats awesome pictures there.
how was the temperature there?

Poxy Boggards 07-01-2012 09:41 PM

It was windy the whole time we were there which kept the temps down. It was very cold at night, upper 30's low 40's.
