With all the talk about not finding the right finbaits lately, sometimes one just has to roll with whatever is plentiful & get right down to business, Jack! When filleting the next meal up, you would be amazed at the stomach contents I find when meticulously squeezing out their entrails always in search of more saline science. Finding a few different half digested morsels isn't uncommon around these parts. Who doesnt enjoy three coarse meals?.. Water visibility was sparkling & amazing. Jimmyz couldnt have said it better & saw for himself expressed in his recent post where both the :wsb: and the :yt:s can be easily seen scouring the tight kelp zones for a easy summer meal. Or three for that matter..But with these current crowds, now the house odds are almost one in three baits will have a hook!? PB's doing doughnuts on your lines in their typical oblivious fashion coupled with your clueless fishing partner who regresses while at slack current, driving right on top of your lines all day will contribute to that stink.. Put more odds in your favor. Limit that noise and crowd factor, then make room in the fridge.
Frequent retreating bait schools of horse dines were actually more visually abundant this particular day regarding the upper surface column & getting chased relentlessly by the fat bastard dogs, pelagics and porpoise, thus I wasn't successful at tanking up on emerald gems. Additionally to my displeasure, those Jack Mackerels bit my sabiki up steady, and no culling would prove to be possible, effective, or even necessary. Made a few decent 7-8" preferred greenbacks in the early morning, but they had gotten devoured instantly by a few younger biscuits behaving rather bizarre & even quite reminiscent to a Tarpon and/or a Thresher Shark rolling over blowing up slashing my rigs versus foamy frothing action. Although I wasn't able to secure my personal slot limit of over 32#+:wsb:, I let the legal pencil-croakers go & searched out a real bruiser:yt: afternoon fight I would soon regret..She kicked my ass and finished off a Shimano, so she paid the ultimate price for her indiscretions. I regretfully decided to bring along a dear TLD thats badly in need of servicing, aka the 'dull rusty knife taken to a gun fight.'
Circled the grounds tight and wide & got sight of a few good sized schools of :yt: in desperate need of corralling. No coaxing was necessary, as they weren't taking requests. I pitched out a Spanish, and my reel screamed that sweet raspy medley.
Sure, plenty of you have bagged various species on Spanish Mackerels, even our very own beloved Baja Rick is rumored to have scored his infamous beast:yt: on one, but I have been banging this precious coastline for some time now & I have never taken a Spaniard as a confidence bait in my arsenal.

Or will I now?..

Get away from the crowds, Pbs, Cattles & noise.. Cover that ground and hold on to whatever bait you do have..

I caught my first LJ YT on a big ass jack smelt. I've had people tell me strait out that YT don't eat smelt. A buddy of mine who lived on Catalina said his go to non squid seabass bait was blacksmiths. I have found blacksmiths in YT stomachs as well. I catch them on the sebiki now and then, maybe I should be using the. Mike

I would troll the first thing I caught on my sibiki. Which explains why I haven't caught a YT on the yak.

Blacksmiths
 

I was Fishing the kelp in Crystal cove once, and ran out of sardines. My buddy drops down a medium size Blacksmith and gets hit within minutes and misses. Then drops another down and pulls up a 4lb Calico. Just like me the fish don't always want Sushi!

Yes, exactly, the whole reel needed servicing prior to launching, but their wasnt time..:doh: hahhahahahahahha........

Lizard Fish?
 

I have great confidence in Jack Mackerel as YT bait; I prefer greenbacks just a bit more. A few years ago, when fishing from my skiff off LJ, bait was scarce so my buddy used a lizard fish. Caught a very nice YT on it.
Another time when bait was scarce, I chopped up a dead mack and fly-lined a chunk of it. My buddy was still fishing with our last live bait and mocked me for my stupidity. Then I immediately hooked up and landed a YT. Then I rebaited with another chunk and caught another. Meanwhile, my friend soaked his live mack and didn't catch squat. LOL

Good meeting you yesterday (I was the guy in the green PA fishing with my in-laws and asked you about your custom wood rails). Great job thinking outside the box and making a move (vs. all us who baited and waited in front of the condo).
