Where to launch in Newport

Hey Guys,

Taking my son to Newport to fish the kelp, where's the best place to launch? Also, is the new bait barge close by?

Thanks,

Josh

coast guard station but be there at 6:00am or 7:00 I am not realy sure. may be someother member can be more precise.

If you're talking about fishing the kelp beds just outside of Newport Harbor that would be Corona Del Mar.

The Coast Guard Station is one of the closest places to the mouth of N.H. (that I know of) When I hit CDM thats where I launch from.

Coast Guard Station 1911 Bayside Drive, Newport Beach, CA. There are restrooms and showers on site. There is a small concrete path that will drop you only a few yards from the water.

The bait barge is in the middle of the channel leading out of Newport Harbor, smack dab in the middle (mostly).

Hope it helps.

Parking can be a bit tricky. If you're going with someone else, then just drop all your gear and yak off at the water, then go park on the street somewhere.. unless you get lucky or get there really early. Head out the jetty, you'll pass the bait barge. Once you're out the jetty channel, turn left and the Corona del Mar kelp should be right there. Good luck.

parking is only allowed starting at 6am. what i do is park there at 5:30 and have all of my stuff prepped by 6am so then i could leave my car.

I have to agree with everyone else. Coast Guard station should be best. I launch at a closer location, only issue is the hill to get down. Or better yet, you can beach launch at little corona state beach, kinda hard now with the swell building.

Yep, USCG for me too. X2 for what Vincente said. But, bring good wheels. The concrete path is blocked right now for construction in the bathroom area. At least it was last week, and looked to be for a while.

I would definitely recommend getting to the coast guard station nice and early 0500-0530 then prep and wait till 0600 to leave the vic. It gets packed early on the weekends not sure about weekdays. Ill be there on sat so looking forward to hearing your report. and tight lines :reel:

yeah the sand on that beach is prett soft, nothign liek baby beach at DP. My HD Hobie wheels were near useless on the pro angler. Even with two people it was a workout getting it to the water.

Speaking of sharks.

Capt. JB 06-27-2013 11:12 AM

Ok guys, we just got back and it was a big donut! The swell was horrible and the waves were 4-6 ft at the beach. Not only did we get skunked, but I forgot my wallet so we couldn't buy bait! My son was a little disappointed but we made the best of it and scoped out a few spots...I see the potential there...will definitely go back again. Thanks again for all the info!

No sharks, no lizard fish, but it was nice just to get out and fish!

Raskal311 06-27-2013 12:42 PM

Definitally check the swell and wind before going out but fishing inside of the harbor could be very productive. And I always bring frozen and/or plastic as a backup. You can also pull muscle from docks on your way out.
