oceanside harbor 7/6 afternoon

Took out my new mini-x I got off the boards and tried her out. I have no idea what I'm doing so I just drift around inside the jetties. Landed a small halibut on a white plastic. Broke my surf rod on a snag on the rock piles. Oh well.

Any suggestions on a starter rod that I can pull up a heavy fish? I need a replacement, lol

A good rod that will take a lot of abuse is the berkley lightning rod shock. I paid 40 bucks at walmart. you can use up to 50 lb test and they have spinning rods and baitcasting. they are the best for your money when starting out.

I was on the other side of the jetty

Thanks for the advice. I had a daiwa 702 mrs surf rod, can't believe I busted that thing.

My wife was pissed! She bought it for me for my birthday a few years back.

i completely agree there. for moderate price, these rods are outstanding.
(although i have not seen any at WalMart in recent years)

i have 3 of these baitcasting lightning rods, used for 6+ years now.
7 ft, med-heavy action, 10-25 lb line.

the stiffness/action of the rod is PERFECT for bays & kelp Bass, etc.
i use 8-10 lb test mono in Bays, and 15-20 lb test mono in Kelp beds.

(but this rod is NOT going to be a rod for bigger fish like YT, WSB, or big Hali's.)
.

On their website they say its only good enough for 25lb test and that's the baitcaster option. Spinning is 12lb. Am I looking at something wrong?

What's the difference between a surf rod and a rod suitable for kayak fishing?

Even the high end seekers will snap if you get too impatient. I broke mine on a lobster pot last year. Any rod is suitable for kayak fishing. It's just depends on what you're going after. Rods break. Rods take a swim. It's all part of the game. Re-gear and get back out there brother!!

I thought lobster season was close? I've seen a few commercial (small) boats with what seemed lobster pots go out and set the cages down in MB, LJ...do they have a special permits or ??

That's better than what we caught in the harbor on Sunday. We paddled out to the AR1 in front of the pier for a couple of sandies and something heavy that broke off...why is it always the heavy's that break off?

We will be checking out AR2 on the 21st if anyone wants to join us out there.
