Boobies in LJ 9/18

Sorry Guys, Boobie birds that is. Just wanted to share a bird sighting if there are any other birders here. I've seen loads of brown boobies in the sea of cortez. (Ya ya, I know. Brown boobies in Mexico). In just the last few years I have seen a few in the middle grounds at the Coronado islands. Today I saw 1 flying along the kelp line at the NW corner. First time I've seen one up here. Cool looking birds, a bit bigger than a seagull, with a very pointed head and bill. They hit the water at full speed with their wings totally pull back with barely a splash. Any way, they look like this.

Didn't catch any thing or see much. Mike

Sorry, More birds. The birds in this video are gannets, a close relative of brown boobies. The feeding strategy of both birds is the same. I've seen gannets on the east coast and boobies in mex doing what the birds in this video are doing. You'll never feel so sorry for a baitfish. Mike

Thanks for the heads-up, we'll keep our eye out for them on our next trip.

We always and very much appreciate all of the nature out in this world, ocean-forrests-deserts-etc. Seeing new animals and plants are always a special treat to us, the other big reason we love being on our kayaks out on the ocean. Your input is much appreciated.

Interesting. I don't think I've ever seen one of those.

These birds were on the news yesterday. I was waiting for someone to play about the boobies

They are cool to watch until they start keying in on your flylined baits. Very annoying on long range tuna trips, especially around Clarion Island and Hurricane Bank. I hope they don't figure out greenbacks are good to eat. They make sea lions look like bait robbing amateurs.

I saw one last weekend out by the 371.. It was my first experience.. He seemed to be following a pod of Blue Whales. cool birds!

Ahhh...boobies and frigates in Baja meant action. I love those birds. I'll always remember them dive bombing our rapalas. Thanks for sharing!
