Perch. Where's the good surf fishin
 

After this swell I would imagine the perch are in. Does anyone perch fish here. I'm clueless about here. Are there any red tails? Any info is helpful cause I do like me some panko perch. Thanks

I fish MB every now and then with a lot of luck. Every now and then you will see big schools of corbina running around too. I use my trout gear and drop shot gulp sandworms...

Bolsa chica has always been good to me... Nice perch, corbina and even halibuts in the inlet. I use sand crabs

I take it your a Pac North West, NorCal guy.

Down grade the gear think trout gear, 1oz is usually the max for perch down here, even lighter. Mostly Barred not many of the big Redtail down this way.

Most of the perch caught in so cal waters are barred surf perch. They can be caught at pretty much any sandy bottomed beach around here. A quick and easy way to rig up is a carolina rigged 1 3/4", motor oil colored grub. Slow and steady retrieve with light tackle and you are sure to get a few.

I like OB from the pier north to dog beach, barred perch and halibut.

X2, great location which always produces good results. As far as gear I always C-rig but typically with 1/2 oz slider. If it's super crazy swell or wind I'll step it up to 1 oz, but that's a max and the conditions really have to call for it. Sand crabs are always the go-to bait if they can be had otherwise it's Gulp Sandworms or BH Grubs, which also produce. I run super light gear too, I think my setup is 8lb braid on something like 4lb flouro leader. Not exact on the setup since it's not often I use it but just wanted to agree on using light gear.

I've gone to Torrey Pines - c-rig like the others mentioned, but also used crack - as in Gulp sand worms.

San Onofre works for me. Fishes like warm water coming out from the plant LOL. I use lugworms and get barred perch, corvina, & yellow croaker mostly but none I want to keep.

Check out the website posted above by old-rookie, forum for surffishing reports offer lots of intel. I surf fish 70% of the time, and yak fish 30%, I have to say TP state beach is a great place to start.... c-rig on superlight set up (i.e. 10#-15# test with 6-8# lead, anywhere from 1/4 to 1 oz weight) will do just fine. All along the coast is great, but watch out for MLPA zones (ie La Jolla, San Elijo) where there are specific regulations around fin species and also prohibits harvesting sandcrabs there. My other alternate spot with lots of success is south Mission Beach, from the jetty all the way up to the pier. Note, sandcrabs are the go-to bait when they're around... most folks also pack some gulp sandworm if don't want the trouble of pumping ghost shrimps or buying bloodworms, but I have to say.. ghosties and bloodworms will nearly guarantee you a bite!

Uh...I'm pretty sure Laguna is off limits for fishing.

Anyways, another good spot to go is South Crystal Cove, that's if you don't mind dealing with some rocky areas. There's a ton of perch down there of all sorts, Black Surf Perch, Barred Surf Perch, Shiner Perch, there are even some Opaleye and bass in the shallows over there too.

the guy there are great and super helpful, they do free surf fishing seminars. went to a couple and they are very well organized with awesome giveaways too.

I'm gunna hit the sand tonight and see what i can get and check out the conditions for a morning float maybe out of newport

Surf fishing is the way to go! Every summer my family will go camping at Carpinteria State Beach and surf fishing is the only way to keep fishing after my wife tells me that I can't go kayaking anymore because I need so spend more time on the beach with family since it is a "family trip." Where there is a will there is a way, sometimes you just have to switch rods and your target species! :D

Crystal Cove in North Laguna is good.
The east end of Balboa peninsula between the jetties.
In Huntington, from Brookhurst up to Warner always works.
I pretty much use the Gulp camo worm exclusively, but mix it up with a 2"curly tail grub, motor oil, once in a while.
Carolina rig with no longer than a 16" 6# leader. 1/2 to 1 oz. egg sinker.
High tide. I've had killer days at sunset with the right tide. Good luck.

Does this time of year produce from surf?

I did exactly that a few years ago and didnt catch a single fish on six trips :S
