Ok been waiting and saving patiently after being out of work since Dec. (unions:mad:) Anyhow got back to work and will be picking up my new to me Hobie Outback tomorrow morning! Besides that I was wondering of things I might need as a necessity? Life Jacket for sure,Marine Radio?,Gaff?, Net?…..all these things I figured some of you guys could help me out maybe extras your wanting to sell?

Question #2 Never been out on open water but I'm really interested in doing the Rockfishing Derby in a couple weeks. Do I need a fish finder or can I follow someone around?

Once you launch you will see enough yakkers out there that you won't have to worry about it, just follow the crowds. Also, please remember to respect others and maintain a safe distance so that you don't interfere in their fishing.

You should have no problem finding the fishing spots during the derby.


As far as the other poster goes.......there is at least a5 foot radius around a kayak that you have to respect. Seriously, if you know the other person, or you guys are talking/ hanging out you can fish much much closer to each other than you think.

Welcome to the addiction. Definitely a PFD. And get a quality one that is very comfortable and made for kayak fishing. If its not comfortable you're less likely to wear and it won't do shit for you in the hatch. Don't skimp on the seat either. Yak ass has ruined many a trip. Take your new yak out a few times before you head to LJ. Get a feel for the kayak. The surf line is a bad place to figure out how the yak handles. I have found it's better to fish the kayak a few times to find out what you need and where you want to put it before investing in a bunch of gear. You can for sure check out the way other have set up their kayaks to get some ideas. Mike
