La Jolla first
First time being followed in by an 8-10 foot hammerhead  Frickin thing followed me for a solid 45 mins to an hour and was inches away numerous times. Guess he could smell the YT on the yak. Had him hooked up for a bit on a greenback as well. After being hooked he bailed. Go pro was out of juice and I was super bummed because would have had some epic footage. Oh, YT caught on fly lined green back in 100 feet of water at NW corner.

Man I hope one of them f***ers doesn't roll up while I'm diving
Rad that they're in so close |
Thanks for the post. I sure don't want to add a hammerhead to the list of species that have given me a scare out there.

Holy guacamole!

That's awesome! We saw one feeding on something on the surface on Monday on the San Diego. It was friggin' huge

Thats pretty cool. Pucker factor was high I bet.
I went on a 2 day this weekend. Hooked a tuna on the popper that was smoked by a 10ft hammerhead right at the gaff. They sure are curious sharks. Not sure I'd want to have a close up encounter with one while on the yak  http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...psa06ba5f5.jpg |
Oh Man!

Yeah Steveooo, I was slightly sketched a couple times because it was within 6 inches of yak numerous times. Overall was a cool experience but 45 minutes of it following me was a bit too much . If it was a GW I would have been way more sketched
Sorry your tuna got munched and hope you landed more |
Do you have a yellow kayak?
Myth Busters proved as plausible that sharks are most attracted to the color yellow. I have a yellow kayak and thought it was because my wife keeps painting a seal silhouette on the bottom. |
Super Shady Fish robbery!@ :p

sounds like an awesome experience, controlling your emotions and staying calm would be very hard for many to do. hammerheads in la jolla. whouda thunk |
8-10' hammerhead inches away is definitely too close for comfort! At that size range a GW might have been a safer encounter.

Nice job keeping your cool. I don't know if I could have done the same.

Caribbean blue Revo. My friend next to me was on my Mango x13. The shark was only interested in me due to a YT on my lap and the blood that was draining through hole for mirage drive train . I did myth busting : bananas on boat/kayak and fishing this past Sunday . That day I had two bananAs I caught two YT. So always fishing with two bananas on kayak |
Some years ago we were fishing off La Jolla, maybe about ten miles out on an 18' Boston Whaler when a hammerhead came up and swam alongside the boat. It was considerably longer than the boat, we had never seen a shark that big. We had a lot of dead fish onboard, that's probably what attracted it.
Big boats on land are small on the ocean. |

same size shark but it had more of a brown color to it......different species I guess |
Actually Tom I saw it at times a few feet from your yak following a brown chum line!
