Behold the Goblin Shark! (picture from a recent article on the web)
Curious to know what bizarre creatures you've seen out there or caught by accident. |
Caught a 5' Angel Shark in the SD Bay before.
Those things are not huge fighters, but they have a bunch of sharp little teeth with some serious attitude. |
I caught a Midshipman next to Spanish Landing. Ugly and blobby things.

Caught this weird looking Wolf Eel...

Wolf eels are excellent table fare. Tough to skin.

Obviously not a 'catch' but I found a hatchet fish washed up on the beach at LJ Shores. LJ Shores is right in from the canyon but still strange to find deep water fish on the beach.
http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=...electedIndex=0 A buddy of mine found a King-of-the-salmon floating near Cat Harbor on the back side of Catalina. That's a weird ass fish. http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=...electedIndex=3 Can't say it's super rare but I've caught banded guitar fish in deep south bay. http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=...lectedIndex=15 hope these photos come out. wolf eel
Whoa! Never seen one of those. Gnarly. I nearly kissed an eel on the mouth while lobster diving last fall. Nice reminder about where you stick your nose when searching for things.

I saw one while freediving a while back near the Cove at La Jolla. He was hanging around on the bottom. Didn't know about the teeth. I'll avoid:D

The Midshipman looks like deep water fish. They have bioluminescent dots on their sides and are really squishy.

I read the description in Amish Ed's post. Very informative.
"Type 1 male or a type 2 male"? Most guys will claim to be a "type 2". Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |
Oh Yeah... they're ornery. Look on Youtube, these things will actually come and attack you, even if you're not food.
I'm not sure if this can happen if they're under water, but when I brought mine up, it was making chomping noises when its teeth came together - had a helluva time removing the hook because it just was not cooperative. I had serious thoughts about cutting the line and letting it keep my lead-head, but that might have hurt it. Quote:

Strange
Hopefully this guy will be back at the Fred Hall shows in the saltwater tank!
