Pardon the seemingly crazy question, but what is the best way to open the rod holder if you don't have a rod in it?

I'm sure you store and travel with the rod holder in the closed position with no rod, so what the best way to open it?

Grab it in the middle above the Scotty name tag and lift upwards...
