Hobie PA - propulsion system
I remember seeing some Hobie PA's with external electric drives, both in the front and steered by a long flexible rod and a rear unit or two, not long ago at LJ.
I've had to move over to a PA from my old Revo due to some nerve pain and it's not so bad in the newer seats in the PA. Still, I'd like to look into possibly putting an external drive on the '12 PA to help with the longer hauls - not too interested in the Hobie unit that goes in the peddle hole. If you have or know someone with a setup similar to the above, could you post some pics and info on it or send me a PM please? I went back thru some searches and did not locate much - maybe didn't enter the right search criteria. Would much appreciate - |

Once you add the trolling motor, do you then need to license/register your kayak ?

PA-12 drive
YakDout,
I Just ordered a Watersnake T24 trolling motor from EZ Bait and Tackle in North Carolina. Here is general info: (http://www.fishingtackleshop.com.au/...-friendly.html) , small enough to fit through the Mirage drive using modified factory Hobie plug. I also purchased a 50 Ah deep cycle battery. Should be getting them this week and start installing this weekend. Motor was 131.00 delivered, Battery was 125.00 delivered. Should increase my range considerably. Steve |
Motor Guide R-3
The Motor Guide R-3 is in my opinion a better motor then the Watersnake. It has more forward and reverse speeds and seems a little tougher in it's manufacturing not to mention a little more thrust. It's also the same price.
It also fits thru the Mirage Drive hole with the two blade prop and a mount made from Hobie's new cassette. Steve...why did you go with the watersnake motor? http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegall...0/IMG_5465.JPG http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegall...0/IMG_5459.JPG http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegall...0/IMG_5460.JPG |
Jim,
how fast are you able to go when the current has died on that motor? have you test a 40lb motor to see if you are able to get an increase in speed? how long does does a 50amp battery last you, if you kept it on at full speed, all at one go ? |
4 Attachment(s)
This is the one I have 30lb thrust, moves a fully loaded PA14 at about 2.5 MPH. I have a 101 ah marine battery and after an all nighter in SD bay it was at 70%.
I lost the original prop and had to find one that worked so you will notice it is a little 'shaved'. |

I was wondering how you guys keep from spilling your latte on your yoga pants. ;)

Jim and All,
I went with the 24 Lb thrust as to not require a full size deep cycle battery. The PA -12 is heavy to start , add all the gear and its quite a load. Since the 24 only draws approx 18 Amps at full speed I could go with a 50 Ah battery. (Still weighs 30 lbs) That and they are getting good reviews. I also saw a youtube video of PA-12 with this motor and it moved the PA 12 very well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZOeZ9HGgow. I will post some pics of my install. Steve |
I like it! Cheaper than a hobie sail kit.... If my back gets any worse I'll have to consider this mod, but since I'll have to deal with the DMV I'm going to wait till there is no other choice...

You seriously just called Jim a kook??? Please do share your expertise as you obviously seem to know more or have them in the sport longer than Jim..
Can't wait to see what you have contributed besides pointless banter and attacks... You need a hit upside the head with one of Jim's Books.. Quote:
