Flyline or Weight For Summer Yellows?
 

I'm wondering what the best and brightest are doing for this. I haven't been out much lately and not sure which way to go. In past years I had strictly flylined macs, then later added 1/2 oz weight above the leader to keep it down a bit for better trolling, and less gulls diving on it, and sometimes did both at the same time for the hi-low. I'm not keen on doing both right now because it's a hassle when sea lions come and increases the chance of kelp snags. I don't remember what worked best in the past but I think it might have been flylined.

Both methods you just listed worked fine back then and work fine now...get out there and drag something around it'll work just fine.

Im about to try it with some weight because I haven't had any luck flylining..but both ways work..just not for me yet

Typically in the warmer water months fish tend to be in the upper water column. So I would say flyline. And vice versa in winter you will find more off the bottom sitting on rocks. And much less up top.

I never use a weight this time of year. At a slow cruising speeds your mack should still be a couple of feet deep and out of the bird zone. A small 1/2 oz sinker isn't going to sink the mack much. The difference of your bait being 2 feet or 6 feet under makes the yt kick its tail maybe 1 extra time. A sinker, even a little one, is just more thing that will snap kelp or grass. Mike

Fly line.

Do a 2 or 3 oz carolina rig on one rig if you are going to troll two macks at the same time. The weighted one being the short troller. That way when you stop to drift the weight will go down and the fly will say up and out the back.

If you're just trolling 1 rig for yt, flyliner.
