110/27 LJ :Take a guess
 

Made the drive south and launched around 6AM, nice silver and grey morning with a red sunrise. Light winds and small surf. Paddled around, trolling a plug and plastic, dropping the yoyo. One sandbass was all that came up. Off the water around 11:30.

Took this photo, anyone want to venture a guess as to what this is?

The dorsal fin is way too straight for any cetacean that lives or visits Southern California water. It has to be a fish of some kind.

Patrick had given me the heads up prior to launching that the free jumping molas have been the only surface activity lately. Did not take long to encounter scattered groups of smallish ones. These came right over to check me out. saw them all over out there.

On a serious note, I recently read somewhere a question asked about were Mola Mola good for eating. The answer was a very definitive no.

Those "boils" some have seen are pizza sized mola molas jumping all over. Kind of like frisbees. There must have been hundreds yesterday.

Jumping? I didn't think that Mola Mola were capable of any sort of ambulation - technically I think they are classified as "plankton" (which means "drifter").... I spit wine through my nose reading this and thinking about a Mola Mola actually jumping clear of the water... But I suppose it is possible - do tell, are you just pulling the collective leg on this one?

No, they were (are?) jumping clear out of the water, and yes, it was quite amusing. Most of the ones I saw didn't make it completely out of the water but at least a few did. It sounded like one little belly flop after another.

Now that would be a sight. One of those things that makes being in a kayak so cool - you'd probably never notice it if you were buzzing around in a 26' Parker. :-)

BTW, it dawned on me that I was wearing a sweatshirt with a mola mola on it when I read your post. :D

Don't know how they do it but I've seen/heard the larger models jump as well. Creates quite a commotion!
