I was up in Pismo Beach all of last week and there were literally hundreds of humpback whales for the better part of two weeks. It was very common to see 10 whale spouts at any one time. There were some paddleboarders and then a couple of kayakers out amongst them. These were huge mammals and the people out there looked miniscule to them. Some of the tails were longer than the two person kayaks. Amazingly, the whales didn't seem to be bothered by the people out there and just as amazing was the fact that no one got injured. But very suddently they all left and moved up the coast, probably as their food source had moved on. It was no surprise to me to read about the whale that breached and fell on top of a couple of kayakers near Monterey. They were more than likely the exact same whales that had been camped out off of Pismo Beach for the previous 2 weeks. Just be careful when around these whales. They are so huge and weigh something like 50 tons! They wouldn't mean us kayakers any harm, but then again, once they get up some momentum and start to breach, they're not going to stop.
