First time catch on a swimbait....plus....dodging swimmer in LJ boat launch on video!

This is a kayak fishing report from La Jolla on 8/20/2016

Do you think the famed swimmers we see at the boat launch are people who fall off the rental kayaks? I didn't see any unmanned or capsized kayaks in the area.

Summary:
1. There is some kelp still in La Jolla!
2. Set out to fish for bass on swimbaits.
3. Caught a Sheephead on a 5-inch Big Hammer
4. Caught 12-fish including mostly Calico Bass, Sheepheads and Rockfish.
5. Video includes highlights of the trip.

It's not the go-to technique, but I've heard of it happening. I noticed that the swimbait you were using was white, maybe the sheephead thought it was a squid?

Good video, thanks for sharing. I'll have to start using some of my swim baits, when the Yellows on live bait action is slow. Yeah it's anoying to have people swimming in the launch area. They are not even the swimmer who go from the cove, mostly idiots who see the area at times, look not too congested so they wade on out. The worse are the idiots who are just standing in waist deep water staring out at the rental kayaks going to the caves. They don't even notice that some kayaks or skiffs are trying to land in the "boat launch area", not swimming area.

When they are hungry it happens. I've caught several of them with swim baits.
Nice outing!

Beautiful sheepshead. Pretty uncommon to get them on a plastic. I had to dodge snorkelers today. Eaves were small but When you're 1/2 in is no time to be back paddling or turn side ways. Most of the super clueless people at the launch are tourists that just rented stuff up the street. Rental shops need to tell those folks to stay out if that area. Mike

Misnomer regarding sheephead

Loved the video. But there was one point in the video where you said "You definitely don't want to put your thumb in his mouth". believe it or not, a sheephead will never close it's mouth on you one you have it up on the surface. I've caught hundreds of them, and have yet to see one of them do anything other than keep their mouth agape once they're over the rail of the boat- even when sticking pliers down their throat to remove hooks. It's really weird. Like they're mouth is stuck in some sort of rigor mortis state.

Fomen...I too tempted fate for years but did manage to eventually get bit. They bite hard, the teeth sink in and it hurts! We may be changing your user name to fofinga in the not to near future!
