Lightweight Kayak
Good morning! My Dad, who is 76, would like to get a kayak to just paddle around the harbor and some lakes. I'd like to get him a kayak that is pretty light and easy to carry. Any suggestions?

The older tridents and and prowlers are like 60#. Surf skis are in the 30# range. Andy was giving one away a while back

Malibu Mini X is about 40 lbs and has a good capacity rating. Great if your not going to be surf launching and go out in the open ocean. They start at like $399. They also have a Stealth 9 based on that model but has hatches and a built in live well, of course that is more expensive. Someone has a Stealth 9 with a bunch of accessories for sale on this site in the Trade or Sale forum. Here is the link to his post, this is loaded he even has a rudder, navigation light, extra rod holders on the X Wing front attachment that can be used to mount and storage for all sort of things including fish finder. http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwevb/s...ad.php?t=34971

A couple questions:
Fishing, no fishing? Budget? Physical ability Here a couple ideas that came to mind. But of course there are many options to consider. Hope this helps! Eddyline @ 45 lbs. Viking GT @ 57 lbs. Hobie I11S Inflatable Stealth Fish 460 @55 lbs. |
I should have mentioned kayak is really just to cruise around in, maybe a little fishing but not really a factor. Budget hopefully under $600?

Malibu Mini X would be a good choice. It is light and stable.

I like my tetra 12 angler. It’s light, and good to paddle. Very fishable. Don’t get the mini-x it’s a tank in the water. I wouldn’t recommend a mini x

If you can find an ocean kayak trident 11 or a hobie quest 11 or a wilderness tarpon those are really good paddling kayaks that don't weigh too much.

Professor Long Arms
had a post for a OK trident 13. I was refraining on giving up information cause I would love to grab it.:D

The trident 13 & 15 are 79 & 91 lbs. The regular prowler 13 & tetra 12 are 56 lbs & 55 lbs. The tetra has a narrow rod pod, which is a bonus for surf launches.
