La jolla 1/15/09

Not much to report, though I did see some candy on the surface but did not have the right sabiki rig. I launched at 9:00 am with one of the flatest calmist launches ever. Pratically no waves. It was even better out in the fishing grounds. Lots of whales migrating south, 6 actually. I tried fishing deep in 140 feet then worked my way into 95 or so. I covered lots and lots of ground for nada but I think I found a real nice location to work when they decide to bite. On the way in I stopped on some deep bait balls and dropped the iron, as soon as I put the reel in gear I hear splashing, I look and theres one single breezer on the surface, I threw the surface iron behind him and got no luck. I have a few Qs about my set up for yoyo. Im using a avet mxj and with pratically every yo yo iron I have they either spin reeling to fast or go straight with no kick when reeling slow and there seems to be no inbetween. I used Ironman 3s, sumo jrs, and the go to salas jrs. Is it the jigs or the reel. Another beautiful day in la jolla, no fish but I learned some more. Thanks again guys, go get em.

I don't think it is the reel, but more the retrieval speed.
-Are you jigging the rod as well as reeling in the jig?
-Jig, reel, jig, reel, repeat.
- Drop to bottom and burn one straight up.
Cast, let sink, and cover as much diagonal water as possible.
All workable techniques.

Some Jigs (for whatever manufacturing reason) do not swim perfectly straight off the shelf.
Sometimes you can trim off big globs of paint under the rings and it will make a difference.

It can be a trial and error process to match your retrieval speed to a jig. Once in awhile I get one that swims nicely, and I mark it with a marker for easy reference.

ICHI....Couldn't ask for a better day.....well except for maybe bringing home a:yt:.

If anyone is considering going out....Get out there! Conditions don't get much better. Seeing this 25 yrds from your kayak is AWESOME!

Nice report guys. The water and whale looks awesome. Throw in some fish :reel:and it would have been perfect.

I bought a Salas 6x Jr a while ago and I'm having the same trouble with it. No speed seems to do the trick with it and I honestly can't tell if it's spinning or doing a back and forth motion. I don't get bad line twist so I don't think it is spinning but it sure doesn't look right. Some are just bad and there is definitely an art to picking out a jig. My brother takes them all off the rack and lays them on the counter to eyeball them. He's got the eye for it, I don't.

Looks beautiful out there! Nice day. Probably Heading out Sunday.
